This is one of my favorite painters right now. Conrad Jon Godly. His work is simple but can be stunning at the same time. Mostly he just paints mountains

You don't think the old masters didn't have paint splattered surfaces all over their studios? Sure they did. They just didn't confuse the paint spatters that are a byproduct of making art with the art.

This statement is everything that's wrong with the art "community"

Good art is about two things - creativity and technique. Kincade has good technique but zero creativity. A lot of modern art is the opposite.

I like the Amoco piece. Not sure it looks like the work of a master, but it's cool.

Problem as I see it is "the edge" is too often such a phony concept.

Modern art is trash. And the vast majority of people who follow modern art are tryhards looking for purpose in life.

We wouldn’t be having this discussion if their work wasn’t meaningful.

Pretty much. Modern art is a niche industry for people who enjoy it but definitely feel elitist.

Art should not be difficult to interpret and should mean different things to different people. If you need specialized knowledge to "get it" and rely on others to inform you what you should enjoy, then it's pretty much worthless.

I don’t agree with that either. Sometimes there really is something actually there and the artist needs to explain. That doesn’t mean it’s worthless, just not readily apparent. When reading a novel like Lord of the Flies or 1984 there is definitely something going on beneath the surface. Those novels aren’t worthless because they take a deeper dive to get what the writer is actually saying.

Same with visual art. The problem though is sometimes there just isn’t something going on beneath the surface (which is perfectly fine), instead of just saying “it is what it is and I felt like making it” the art world compels them to make up a lot of nonsense about it so it’ll sell.

I meant, is something “innovative” just Bc it’s never been done before? Some things have never been done before Bc they are stupid. The first artist who uses pigeon poop to draw stick figures isn’t innovative just Bc it’s original.
