The great masters have more in common with Thomas Kincaid than Basquiat

Read this and I found it intruiging and in many ways I agree. It’s almost cliche to say but damn modern art sucks. The art industry is quite possibly the largest in terms dollars now than its ever been in history but the world seems starved of any that’s any good.
It started with people pushing the envelope which is fine but the envelope got pushed so far that skill has become irrelevant so long as you can talk "artsy" about it. I think you can look at a painting by Rembrandt and anyone can immediately recognize the skill and talent and beauty of it. They don’t need a douche to ramble about the existential feeling you get looking at a white canvas and the inner meaning of it all.
Artists have gotten lazy. Really, really lazy.
Here is a Thomas Kincaid painting which is ugly but also undeniably skillful
And here’s one by Basquiat who is at the peak of the modern art world
It would make a nice Radiohead album cover but will people in 200 years be looking back and think what geniuses we are or will the past century be a major stain in the history of art?
It started with people pushing the envelope which is fine but the envelope got pushed so far that skill has become irrelevant so long as you can talk "artsy" about it. Kincaid is a very gifted artist.
He just does not appeal to the snobby crowd.
He is easy for an art snob to hate. He is like the Phil Collins of art. Most music snobs think Collins was below average as a drummer and performer. But he was very successful.

Modern "art" is all about shock value and nothing about actual skill. It's kinda like the emperor's clothes. Everyone wants to fit in with the trendy artsy crowd and only the outsiders can see how ridiculously stupid most of it is.

I agree. Eventually the shock goes away though, the envelope pushed to the breaking point. We need a modern renaissance where people rediscover techniques and skill and eye of the masters and the art world becomes more focused on the painting than the bullshite once again.
Unfortunately the skills aren’t being passed from master to pupil any longer, so further generations of artists are going to have to teach themselves. After the collapse of Rome there was the dark ages but we eventually came to. Perhaps the world of art will do the same.

Most artists before photography were simply trying to semi-realistically portray the subject, first and foremost. But they often did it very well and with great skill.
Photography changed everything. Before then, kings and other power brokers had nothing better in which to guide investing decisions. But after?
Suddenly it was no longer important to know how to draw a hand accurately with charcoal. Instead the story became important. Such as this one:

Nah I think I have more of an idea than you think. Certainly enough time in art programs over the years including it being my major for a while to have an opinion.
