Can someone explain the scenarios of "back flow" or whatever it's called when all of this water starts receding and our pumps in Ascension can't keep up? Hard finding information about those scenarios at the moment.

Fingers crossed that the Amite in Denham is nearing its final crest. That poo city has been inundated.

Smaller streams drain into larger streams. Those larger streams drain into rivers.

When the river gets higher than the smaller streams that feed into it, the river starts to flow backwards up the smaller streams.

The streams that were once draining water downstream, are now taking on water in the opposite direction because they are lower than the larger river they are connected to.

My brother is out in central on boats rescuing people and apparently they are not allowing anymore boats to launch in that area. Just a heads up to any more Good Samaritans

Just left Magnolia Beach rd at Greenwell Springs helping out. The currents are getting out of control, and harder for the smaller boats to handle it safely.

You may be with my brother, that's where he was in boats. Sent his family to safety and has been there all day helping. We haven't heard from him in awhile. Hope he's ok.

Here is the current problem. You have all of the canals in Baton Rouge, which are actually falling right now...

Then you have the big Amite, which has flooded Denham, cresting up at Denham and moving downstream.

They meet at a confluence point. Right now, this is the river gauge at that point:

So backwater flooding, if it will happen, HAS NOT HAPPENED YET, meaning that these canals are not out of danger - backwater flooding would mean that the water flows back into the canals from the Amite, and if you've seen pictures of Denham, you know just how much water that is.

This is a description of what happens at 16'. This has NOT been realized yet, as the crest has NOT reached this point and so the canals are completely unaffected by the water coming down the Amite. That will change very soon.
