I always favor redevelopment over new development. Although I live in a more urban area, so there is a lot more old building stock that can be repurposed. But this falls in line with that. By conserving these areas and not over developing you're making it safer for the people that do live around there.

Also further investigation shows me that the swamp IS hydraulically connected to bayou manchac via alligator bayou. But there's a very small culvert underneath alligator bayou road. It's likely that water was backflowing from manchac into the south side of the swamp all along, albeit very slowly because of the culvert under the road acting as a pinch point.
This also makes those gauges make much more sense. They're still slowly rising because they're at 10-11 feet, still lower than the Amite. Water is flowing into that area from both directions.

The white screen porched house in the second picture is my cousins house. I grew up off Stringer Bridge road... Not one person in that area was spared. A lot of my family have feet of water in their houses and its not going down.

I asked once but does anyone have any anecdotal evidence of the flood levels along Claycut Bayou in 83 compared to now.

are there any closures along Hwy 30 between I-10 and LSU?

Yeah I can that that now, though I didn't know about the levee gate control. That's good info that honestly should be shared with the public by both Iberville Parish and EBR. Really wished I had noticed Saturday night and could have eased people's minds.

Furthermore, it sounds like the draining of the swamp in '09, if true, had to help as well.
Springlake is very fortunate that 99% of it is dry.
Does anyone remember the 1995 flood? A relator told me that building in Springlake/Fairhill took off when it didn't flood in '95, and that would have obviously preceded the Spanish Lake draining in '09.

LSUJuice you are correct. The Spanish Lake swamp "is hydraulically connected to Bayou Manchac," but the natural flow of water is controlled by the Alligator Bayou gate and Manchac levee system. The gate is set at a certain level by Iberville parish. My guess is that it was fully closed for this flood event.
And, yes, the gauges make perfect sense. You have a huge amount of water on the east side of I-10, because of the Amite and Ward Creek, and much less on the west side (Bayou Fountain, Spanish Lake). The most important pinch point for the whole system is the narrow canyon that the water has to go through under the I-10 bridge. The water from the east side wants to go west but the volume is slowed by the lack of space in that canyon.

Having said all of that, there is still danger of more flooding in the Bayou Fountain basin. The water elevation at the I-10 bridge is around 20ft right now. The gauge at Alligator bayou is 11.65. The water is moving slowing through the narrow channel/canyon created when the interstate bridge was built. There is an 8ft+ elevation differential between the two sides of Bayou Manchac separated by I-10. Only when that balances out will the flood risk be completely over for the Bayou Fountain side of things.
so does that mean even though the BF water seems to be holding steady/receding that if could quickly backflow even more? You may need to dumb it down for me

Broussard/Babin Rd/ 73 / 74 folks: Grand Goudine at Babin has stalled, after slowly but steadily receding. That gauge has been reporting very slowly....anyone have eyes on the bayou to confirm what it's doing?

Amite at French Settlement is holding steady around 9.16. My parents on Butch Gore rd in Lake Martin are reporting a slow fall that began late last night.
