where does this leave the people who are about to retire with a pile of cash versus someone who is just entering the job force?

You know a lot of politicians want to hit that with more taxes prior to withdrawal just to make things fair to the people who didn't save.

Or people can continue to drive themselves.

I often think about this at red lights. Imagine an entire group of cars all taking off at the same time. No delay while someone reacts to the driver ahead of them.

Why would we all riding in separate cars then? Seems really inefficient under this system.

That's a great point, however, I think there would be enough people willing to pay the premium for a private car, inefficiency be damned (vs. public transport, dealing with other people etc.).

You'd have to reach a point where it's outrageously expensive, a la private jets, before people give up their privacy.

I genuinely hate this word and I have no clue why

Maybe it’s the people that use the word, or the way they use the word, but I just can’t stand it

I’m weird, I know

Uber is a shitty company that was screwing drivers anyway. I’ve never thought anything bad of them until recently. They sent me a promo so we decided to order pizza, the order never came and they basically offer zero support. Took me like 4-5 hours over a couple days to get my money back. Seems like the order went to a third party that creates fake restaurant listings, was so sketchy.

In that time frame I read about how shitty they treat drivers, and will deactivate your account if you initiate a chargeback.

I don’t think so. I think they’ll still be around in five years. 20 years maybe not though.

No, I will say I’m not sure why people do work for Uber. I guess they like the flexibility of it, but it doesn’t seem like you can make that much money once you factor in wear and tear on your car. You’d be better off working at buccees.

Great post, thanks.

I'm strongly considering getting a Tesla before the tax credit runs out (most likely before end of month), mostly because of the FSD. Any thoughts/experience with one of the newer hardware (HW4) and software combos for FSD?

Also, the Tesla driverless summon (arse) is supposedly a mess. I've assumed that it was because it needs to be super cautious when it doesn't have someone behind the wheel. But apparently, even under supervised FSD, Teslas go full retard in parking lots. Any idea why that's an issue when they're supposedly pretty damned good on roads/highways? It seems that parking lots should be easier than roads.

Yep. We might be forced to finally entertain the idea of universal basic income.

Paying every American even something like 20k/yr would be slightly larger than the entire federal budget today.

That's every person, even kids. I've never seen a scenario where this is realistic. Who is going to be consuming all of these goods and services if we have 25% unemployment?

Theoretically, corporate income taxes would be much, much higher. The logic is that much higher taxes are the price that the corporations would have to pay for replacing everyone’s jobs with machines in order to increase their profits.

People on UBI will just be the equivalent of the current welfare/food stamp class with a meager, subsistence existence.

I agree. Might be better than no income from a job or anything else at all though

And if we gave it to every person in the country, assuming we could even afford it, there would be massive incentive to have more kids if you are poor

I honestly would prefer a person to drive.

People do that to make money or extra money to provide and i hate taking that away from anyone

Yeah. There would definitely need to be some guidelines and guard rails to prevent abuse.

I say no one gets it until they’re 16 at least

High-income earners would need to be excluded as well. The UBI could be phased out the higher a person’s income is, but maybe they could deduct the first $20,000 of their earnings from their taxable income.

One really wonders how well middle / working class Americans would be doing if all the billionaires that became mega-multi billionaires on the back of exporting manufacturing labor overseas, cutting American workers wages and benefits through part-time, gig work, gaming health care etc etc were still just regular old fashioned billionaires?

Something tells me the vast majority of our problems wouldn't seem so bad.
