The Army War College does an incredible ride along tour of Gettysburg...
One of the best experiences from my year there (class of 2010). Did the Antietam staff ride as a part of one of my electives. Played the role of Longstreet.

I'm glad battlegrounds like this one, Vicksburg, Shiloh, and other historic places, were set aside as public memorials that anyone can visit.

My buddy and I took a tour there around 2006. Was pretty cool. They do a good job and mention it in the tour that they try to keep the battlefields the same as they were back then as far as tree, a lot of the surrounding area is heavy forrest, but I recall them saying everywhere around that area back then was not.

I was there with a guide not long ago. The area of Pickett’s charge has not been spoiled with urban spawl. You must be thinking of another part of battlefield.

Most places in the east were probably less forested around the time of the civil war than they are now. Pretty simple really. Every house had a stove or two and a fireplace or two. Trees around any settlement got scarce pretty quick. There were no tree lined neighborhoods. When you needed to get some wood in the middle of the winter, we’re you going to walk your arse out to the back 40, or were you going to get that oak in your yard?

Thanks for posting these photos. It's on my bucket list to visit the Gettysburg Battlefield and I hope to do it soon.

We visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield Monument about 4 years ago and it brought tears to my eyes taking the walking tour. I'm sure Gettysburg would be even more emotional for me.

There was a private business that built a huge metal observation tower overlooking Gettysburg NMP in the early ‘70s.

Almost anywhere a person was at the battlefield it was possible to see the tower.

Preservationists finally had it condemned and it was demolished (YouTube Video Link) in July of 2000.

Glad to hear, the relief is probably welcomed.

Pro Tip:

Use a bidet afterwards.

Yes they did.

It was cool for 15 year-old me to see in the ‘70s.

The Guardian has a great site where you can swipe left of right to see the photos change from then to now. Enjoy.
