Officials at southern Utah’s Zion National Park say they’re being overrun by visitors, even during the usual winter lull.

Rangers had to block tour buses and oversize vehicles from Zion Canyon to control the crowds during the holiday season and close the road. Cars are sometimes rushed through the toll gate without the usual $30-per-vehicle charge as traffic backs up into neighboring Springdale.

Visitation is expected to top 4 million for 2016, a record. The number of visitors headed to see snow-covered red rock during the park’s offseason has jumped by the biggest margin, ticking up nearly 70 percent since 2010. Other national parks reported record attendance in 2016. Nearly 3 million people visited Glacier National Park in Montana last year, a record, officials said.

The park has a mandatory shuttle system in the summer, but the service is curtailed in the winter, meaning more visitors use cars.

Zion National Park leaders are working on a new master plan for managing the ever-growing crowds that have waits for the shuttle topping two hours at times. Park officials could institute a timed-entry or reservation system, or develop trails that encourage non-motorized transport. The final plan is expected in fall 2018.

I'm ok with this if it means protecting our national parks. Smoky Mountains can get terrible in the summer.

Didn't they just have an ad campaign telling people to visit national parks?

I went there last year. I was shocked when I had to pay $30 to get in. And yeah, their isn't very much parking. We parked at one of the towns before you enter the NP at one of the first trolley stops. Took quite awhile to get in, and then you had to pay and get in another trolley. It was worth it tho.

Debali already does this for the backcountry and you can only use private vehicles at designated times in the spring and fall.

CBS Sunday morning just did a story on the national parks. The correspondent visited all the parks over the year and stated that certain parks would have to move to something like this due to the massive amount of people that visit certain parks

If you get a half mile off the road you can fimd solitude in just about any NP. Most Americans are content to gawk at the scenery from their cars.

Zion's proxemity to Vegas and the Grand Canyon make it an extremely popular park. The main issue with the park and traffic is its extremely small for the number of visitors. Kolob Canyon area of the park is more represnative of normal park traffic.

The National Park System is one of the few things the FedGov does well, IMO.

probably the best 30 you have ever spent.

If you are interested in visiting multiple parks, the interagency pass is 80 and will get you into all the parks and Monuments

Went to Zion in the summer of 2013 and do not remember having a problem with lines. We bought our annual NP pass at the gate and used that for the rest of our trip. It must be getting pretty bad.

Yeah. Two years ago we went to Zion and Bryce and then to RMNP later in the year. Best money for the return I spent all year.

Yea I was there a couple of years ago and it wasn't that bad. I even got a spot in the Lava Point Campground on my first try. Must have gotten a lot worse.

I've been to this park more than any other park. I think 7 times.

Every time it's harder and harder to either camp at the campgrounds or in the backcountry. I'm perfectly fine with this.

As soon as you get on a trail though, number of people you see shrinks.

Why not build a tram through the natural forests and make everyone take the tram if they want to visit.

we went for christmas a few years ago and it was absolutely vacant. Go figure. It was so awesome, we would go on long hikes and see no one.

that was probably 10 years ago though. We talked about going back this year but for some reason didn't. Glad we didn't.

Problem with Denali is that it severely restricts who can afford, or is physically able to really see the park. The buses are ridiculous.

I feel like while national parks are really crowded, national monuments are typically overlooked. On the USDA side, national forests are also overlooked. State parks are great also.

Some real hidden gems out there.

Spent two days hiking in Grand Staircase Escalante as well...easily the most remote place I've ever been. So surreal.
