The first crack in the Mafia

The fall of 1963 saw something that had never happened before on national tv: a member of the Mafia squealed. Joe Valachi was living in a cell with none other than Vito Genovese. Genovese gave him the "kiss of death." IN revenge, the made man, Valachi, ratted out the mob to Senator McLelland's committee before all the cameras.
Keep in mind we didn't have the Godfather, Sopranos, Goodfellas, and other shows that told the story of the mob. This was the first glimpse the American public got of the Mafia from the inside, and it made Hoover look pretty damn bad. Here are the first few news stories that appeared in September 1963. I will add more later in the thread so you don't have to drink from a fire hose. ;-)

I just watched a 3 part Docu-series type thing on Hulu (I think) that had a bit on this.
name of show was American Godfathers: The 5 families.
pretty interesting watch.

And life in major American cities has never been the same since it's demise. Right or wrong, a public service was removed and replaced with Mogadishu governance

I had a cousin in the gay mafia. They were savage yet fabulous. Very queer organization.

When the left still believed in free speech.

There is no Mafia. I advise you to look elsewhere for your true crime entertainment. Good day to you.

The Appalachian meeting was six years prior so this was certainly not the first crack in the mob

OP watches too much TV...
A guy's got a vowel in his last name and he's a criminal.
Just trying to sell some fresh produce and olive oil...
Effin' feds camping out in my driveway...

McLellan and RFK had been going after the Mafia for a few years. A couple of years prior to Valachi’s testimony, they held their first hearings, but they didn’t produce much information or testimony.
Crazy Joe Gallo helped create the image of the cool gangster during his testimony.

The first time a member broke Omerta.
If there was such a thing.
Which there isn't....

Funny you said that. Awhile back I saw on Twitter people posting crime and theft going on in Chicago. One of the comments was, "at what point do we just turn it back over to the mafia? At least then they'll be order". The guy kinda had a point.

You think bums and addicts would be sleeping on the Strip in Vegas if the mob still ran things?

There is a book called “ The Valachi Papers”.

Everyone knew the rules and the consequences - inside and outside the enterprise - was a corporation in the truest sense of the word

Picking up where I left off. Here are some more articles that give a glimpse of the mob.
