Alabama is one of the least boozy states in the country. An analysis of states where people drink the most put Alabama near the bottom – ahead of only Tennessee, West Virginia and Utah. Within Alabama, however, one area stood out for having the heaviest drinkers in a low-drinking state.

According to 24/7 WallStreet, the drunkest city in Alabama is the Auburn/Opelika area. Some 18.4 percent of adults in the area reported being binge or heavy drinkers. Binge drinking is defined as having more than four drinks on one occasion for women and more than five for men; heavy drinking is defined as having eight or more drinks per week for women and 15 or more for men. Just over 14 percent of Alabamians statewide report being binge or heavy drinkers, the fifth lowest figure in the country. The U.S. average is 18 percent. Slightly more than 25 percent of driving deaths in Auburn Opelika are related to alcohol, a figure slightly less than the state average.

The states reporting the highest percentage of excessive drinkers were North Dakota (24.7 percent); Wisconsin (24.5 percent); Alaska (22.1 percent); Montana (21 percent); and Illinois (21 percent).
