The fact that B.R. has almost as many methadone/detox clinics as New Orleans should tell you something.

Buddy, I've never known Baton Rouge to be any different than how you described it.

I know I’m dating myself, but it most definitely was not like this in the 80s. You’re prolly a young un.

Throw Essen in too, for traffic if nothing else.

I don't remember Baton Rouge being nice in the 90's. I remember a dangerous city full of abandoned buildings everywhere. If Baton Rouge was ever nice, it must have been before I was born. I just assumed Judge Parker's deseg order, the raising of the drinking age to 21, and the 80's oil crunch combined to kill it.

Absolutely false. Once again having to defend downtown from low effort posting here from people who do not even visit. I live downtown, go out drinking/eating 1-4 times per week. Went out last night, there was live music at Ohares as there is every Friday and Saturday. During the day it’s hot af and every business owner will tell you summer is slow until football season starts back up. Perfectly safe and clean. There are a few harmless homeless people which is annoying but that’s every city. They won’t bother you. Yes we could use more funding and new venues but overall it’s fine for what it is. For me less than 10 minutes from work and walkable.
I love hearing this!!!

I see you a BR homer and I respect it. I really hope it can be a great city. It's the capital of the state where I was born and raised and I'm always rooting for the state to be better. I've come into town every year since I moved away and sadly this time it seemed like it had gone off a cliff. I really hope, for you, that my negative thread has not blocked major investments into the community.

I agree with him, and I got there almost 10 years before Katrina.

For traffic, sure, but outside of that, the Essen corridor is fine from a “this looks trashy” perspective.

The "line" has moved from Greenwell Springs in the 90's to Florida Blvd in the early 2000's. That line has now moved to I-12 and may be more south than that in recent years.

Here in the City of St. George, we have begun fortifying ourselves along Stumberg, Coursey, and Jones Creek. We must stop the offensive.

Was it just a bad and unlucky week or is it as shitty as it seemed?

Baton Rouge had its issues pre-Katrina, but the influx of the criminal element from NOLA is what really accelerated the city’s decline. Also, poor city leadership has plagued Baton Rouge virtually my entire life. The Kip Holden years were a bright spot for downtown development, but Broome killed all that. I love BR. It has a shite ton of potential that will sadly never be realized.

Unfortunately that doesn't stop a big fat check from Get Gordon Get It Done for your perimeter fortification to rot from a swarm of termites. Death by a 1000 cuts and not a matter of if, it's when in BR/St. George etc.

Just blow any bridges over Claycut Bayou and Jones Creek. Use Hickory Ridge as the boundary.

I can't stand the current condition of BR and it's been headed that way for a while. But I live in the middle of the city and can be at the hunting camp in 40 mins to take my kids hunting. I can hop in the truck and be at False River in 45 mins to take the kids fishing. I can be in Grand Isle in 3 hours fishing for specs and redfish. I enjoy doing these things like many other people that live here.

Where else can I go that I can do these things? If it's out there, it's most likely to cost way more than it does here. Like anywhere, there are good things and bad things wherever you live. You have to ask yourself what is important to you. You can live pretty good in SLA making decent money.

With that said, I hope things can turn around but it doesn't look good. Sid might have bit off more than he can chew. In his defense, there aren't many people that would be capable of turning this thing around.

Born at the old Our Lady of the Lake (downtown near the capitol building - long since torn down). Grew up there (Istrouma and Broadmoor areas) in the 60s and 70s. It was a great place to live (with just a few exceptions). Graduated Broadmoor in 1981 and joined the Army. Only briefly lived there again afterwards. Breaks my heart to see what my hometown has become.

Outside of 2-3 Saturdays in the fall there is no reason to live there.
