Eh, they have some of the wildest counter-cultures in the world. The OP is an example.

quote:

two different Japanese men corrected me for dipping the sushi in soy sauce with the rice side down. Apparently they dip the fish side only. That is symptomatic of the conformity that everyone is pressured to adopt.

That seems like a poor example. That's not conformity, that's them being polite and teaching an American how to properly eat sushi.

A better example would be their work culture and expectations. That's certainly one of the negatives.

Yeah. There is a dark underbelly for sure. They average a half dozen Salaryman suicides a week from guys throwing themselves in front of trains. The delays caused by this are displayed as “passenger injury on tracks” on the station displays. Saw it twice in one week while I was there.

The kicker? Guys only commit suicide AFTER WORK in the early evening. Because killing yourself and delaying trains thus making others late to work would be dishonorable. Making people late to get home? Not a big deal.

Japanese women are gorgeous, respectful and treat their men well.

No tats, lip fillers, butt injections or bad attitudes

My great uncle was an expert on Japan and doing business in Japan. He had a beautiful Japanese wife. He pointed out that the Japanese woman most American men find attractive are not as attractive to Japanese men.

When my son was stationed in Okinawa, he was able to go into Japanese neighborhoods and patronize a bar or two as he knew how to present himself in their culture.

In one case, he entered a bar that promptly asked him to leave (and he politely do so). An older Japanese man, likely a Yakuza, came out and invited him to a different bar.

The proper way for an American to eat sushi is however the American does it. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

If you ever get the chance, when he decides to leave, see if they can get onboard for the cruise coming home. A kid I coached in baseball and his Dad took the return trip. Coach talks about it to this day.

Interesting culture. I know they don’t have the hang ups about thinking sex is a bad thing like some westerners do.

"They hate your guts"? Son has lived there for 7+ yrs. married to a beautiful Japanese girl, has 2 beautiful daughters & teaches English to Japanese children. They have a large circle of Japanese friends, married couples, single men & females. He has experienced nothing resembling hate, & after 7 yrs, he knows their friends well. In addition, the parents of his students have gone out of their way to tell him how much they appreciate him & the work he is doing with their children. He gets along with all his in laws & they are well past the stage of just being polite. The only Americans who are hated, deservedly so, are the Marines based on Okinawa. Suffice to say, being politically correct, there are diversity issues among the Corps. & the island population.
