It'd help if you at least clipped part of the article:
quote:
Today, 84% of 11 year olds aren’t allowed to leave their street, with 53% not even allowed to leave their front yard. For 14 year olds? 92% aren’t allowed to leave their neighborhood, and 55% can’t leave their streets.
In England data shows that in 1971, 86% of primary-age children traveled home from school unaccompanied. By 1990, that had fallen to 35%. By 2010, it was 25%.

one thing did occur to me, I think you have to define “neighborhood”. Does that mean subdivision? Lots of these big suburban neighborhoods are massive so I could see that

as i kid i went everywhere by my self or friends my age. we lived in BR in the garden district until i went to 5th grade. My boundaries were the railroad tracks to the west, Government to the north, Acadian to the east and Broussard to the south. (all pre '84) 84 moves to Shenandoah, and basically all over the subdivision and white oak/lake of white oak
not so much for my kids.....but the the oldest 2 never wanted to go outside, and my youngest just goes to the back yard

Don't overcomplicate this. Anxious women caused this, and Life360, etc. are the symptom of their anxiety.

Some are.
We had some friends over a few weeks ago and this topic came up, about how much to let your kids roam.
I mentioned that we let our 13 year old daughter meet her friends at the local park about 0.5 miles away. She rides her bike or walk, up to her.
One of the Dads started lecturing me about the dangers of the world and how he doesn't let he is daughter leave the street without him. I just ignored him.
My daughter rode her bike this morning about 1 mile to a local church because she is helping with an art camp.
Let your kids go.

Article is in England. I guess it has become that way because people are afraid their kids will be groomed by rape gangs...

"Neighborhood" doesn't really have a clear definition, so I don't really know how far away from their house people who listed "neighborhood" as their limit are allowed to go.
Street is less vague than neighborhood, but even there there's a little bit of vagueness. I'd interpret street to mean that you'd literally be forbidden from leaving the sidewalk that surrounds the city block where you live, and you'd be forbidden from even going to an adjacent city block. But I don't know for sure how the respondents to the survey interpreted the word "street".
With that being said, a lot of people (including over half of 11 year olds) aren't allowed outside the front yard, and I think the front yard has a pretty clear definition.

My oldest is 9 and youngest is 5. The 9 year old can ride her bike to friends' houses in the hood alone, but that's a fairly recent development. We have her check in when she gets there and before she leaves.

Ours is plenty big enough that there is no reason for them to leave.

Stranger danger was an incredibly successful fear campaign. The world has never been safer, yet people have convinced themselves it just keeps getting more and more dangerous

No. That was just in refence to one study.

The chance of a child getting hurt by a parent is higher than being abducted. So if you really want to be safe you should let your kid be a kid

We don’t live in a neighborhood per se. My biggest problem is people do like 50 mph on my street which is a 35 mph, so not exactly a slow speed limit. My kids are 5 & 3, I can’t trust them and I can’t trust other people to be looking out and we don’t have a sidewalk. So right now, the kids are confined to the yard until I deem them responsible enough to be looking out for vehicles, unfortunate as that is.
