They had a lot of help. Dan Gurney and Brock Yates did it all by themselves.

This. The modern guys have teams of dudes for support...plotting routes, checking lanes, etc the entire route.

The OG dudes did it hardcore. And at much, much slower speeds

The rest of your list is accurate but this is not. Due to many of the things you list and more cars today are heavier than their analogs in the 70s.

These pictures of similar weight cars shows how much car weights have increased.

It's cute you think these runs aren't completely coordinated and planned out years in advance.

It's mid blowing you think you can "plan out" the actions of literally thousands of drivers reactions.

When you finally grow up, hopefully you'll understand how putting others lives in danger for a "record" is retarded.

And when you stop being an obtuse fricking moron, you'll realize they aren't running those speeds and routes during meemaw's morning commute.

There's a reason why you never hear of these guys in the news, on the police blotter, on LivePD, etc.

look at all the "meemaws", but they don't take those routes right?

and they talk about having all these spotters working for them, one of which was pulled over for 130 mph.

So not only are they stupid, they have other vehicles driving Recklessly because of them.

And let me guess, ALL the spotters are professional drivers in appropriately equipped vehicles as well.

Get outta here.

You think they're running at 100mph+ on those routes? Average speed is a thing.

Link?

You have some proof they're not?

FIFY

"You know, the best thing about this whole deal is the fact that we came the entire bleeding distance without bothering anybody. Nobody else even knew we were on the road...I'm talking about the average guys out there with their families. We did it all without them having the slightest idea of what was going on. As long as you can do something without endangering anybody or inconveniencing them, how can you say that something like the Cannonball Baker is wrong?"

it's in the video OP linked.

along with the motorcycle "flashing" people out the way.

So again, they aren't driving these speeds on some magical empty roadway. They are doing it on roads shared by other people.

No record is worth a single human life. Imagine your kid gets killed because these asshats wanted a record. Would it be "cool" then?

After leaving the Red Ball garage on the east side of Manhattan at 12:57 a.m. on November 10, it took Toman, Tabbutt and Chadwick 27 hours and 25 minutes to reach the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, in L.A.'s South Bay. In a car. If number crunching isn't your thing, allow me to break that down for you. Taking the northern route—I-80 through Nebraska, I-76 down to Denver, I-70 to the middle of Utah and I-15 down into L.A.'s spiderweb of interstates for a total of 2825 miles—Toman and Tabbutt were able to maintain an overall average speed of 103 mph. That's including stops for fuel, which they managed to keep down to a blindingly fast 22 and a half minutes total. And that's in a country where the speed limit on interstate highways is usually 70 mph, and never higher than 80 on the roads they were traveling.

They were driving during the day too though. Not just at night.

Just get off your high horse dude. It’s insufferable. It’s a neat thing that they obviously did as safely as possible. No one was hurt.

High horse? laughable. I just see it for what it is : stupid.

Just because it didn't happen, doesn't make it safe.

And what do you think will happen now? Someone will attempt to break their record, thus the cycle continues. Faster and faster until someone dies.

But yeah, "hur hur, 'merica, they went fast fast..."

But, none of that happened.

You are getting all angry and shook up over something that didn’t happen.

Do you apply that mindset to everything or just this situation?

Scruffy didn't post in third person. Bawcephus thinks Scruffy is the one angry and shook up.
