In a beautiful gesture by Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau, and in honor of Ukrainian president Zelenskyy's visit, the Parliament of Canada gave a standing ovation to 98-year-old immigrant, and Ukrainian WWII veteran, Yaroslav Hunka. He was described by Canadian Speaker of the House Anthony Rota as a "veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of 98."

Hunka served in the 1st Ukrainian Division toward the end of the Second World War. However, there's just ONE problem. While it is true that Hunka was a Ukrainian veteran of the Second World War, and while it is true that he served in the 1st Ukrainian Division, that unit was known by another name.

The name? The 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS. In the aftermath of World War II, the Nuremberg Trials proclaimed the Waffen SS as a "criminal organization" and many of its leading members were imprisoned or executed for war crimes. While there is no proof that Hunka was involved in any specific atrocities, the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division has been accused of multiple war crimes by survivors.

In a grand spectacle of virtue signaling, Canadian politicians applauded a literal Nazi. Had they done a modicum of research on this man's unit, the would have realized that this man fought for very bad people. Instead...they look like idiots.

I’d never go there and have fun. It’s too rugged. Too many mountains. Too remote. Our dollar spends so hard there I wouldn’t want them to go broke.

Yeah, when your PM overtly says he admires China because of their authoritarian power over their people, then you've probably got a problem.

Trudeau is an authoritarian, so it makes perfect sense.

The difference between a left wing authoritarian and a right wing authoritarian is a classroom opinion.

As far as Ukrainian Nazis go, the truth seems to matter less to many than their own ideology. Yes, of course there were many Ukrainians who favored the Nazis.
Some people seem to be in denial of this historical fact.

On the other hand, people who do acknowledge it can't seem to see things outside of a narrow Western viewpoint. Ukraine was caught between Hitler and Stalin (who already starved and killed millions of them).
Given that horrific choice, it is not hard to see why Ukrainians, at least ones who are not Jewish or Slavic, would side with the Nazis. Easily the least horrible option (of 2 terrible options)at the time, given the circumstances.

Resistance to Russian hegemony is obviously going to evoke past resistance efforts, of which the Nazis represent one of the most overt and recent.

I guess given the ridiculous mainstream propaganda that Ukraine is some Western style "liberal democracy" confuses people. Under Zelenskyy, it is the same corrupt, authoritarian regime that it has always been.

In either case, it is not only none of our goddamn business, but against the interests of the US citizenry to be involved. Unless you are a politician washing your crooked money there or heavily invested in the defense industry.
