It’s over 2000 years old and like you said the Turks blew the damn thing up. I’d say the Greeks did pretty well.

If the British Museum relents, then it will never stop. Every single ethnic or cultural group will demand any artifact, to which they have any remote claim, be returned to them. Any museum’s refusal will be labeled as racism/oppression and museum curators and directors will lose their jobs. The likes of the Smithsonian and the British Museum will be reduced to empty halls and echoes all in the name of “progress” and “healing”.

Just as with the Confederate flag issue, it didn’t stop with removal of flags, but continued to removal of statues, changing of road names, and I expect in the not-too-distant future even battlefields will be closed off and paved over.

Give a mouse a cookie.

This. And if won’t stop there. Next will be wanting land captured in ancient wars returned. I say anything bought, stolen, or conquered before current lifetimes should stay where it is.

The mummies got along just fine in Egypt for several thousand years before being "rescued" by the Brits.

I am not big on rewriting history or returning artifacts but lets not pretend they had some benevolent act in mind when they plundered.

One could argue the same for pretty much everything else in the British Museum as well.

It's basically the world's largest trophy case.

Last time I was at the British Museum, I took this image.

Even the Land Mass has been plundered by the Brits-

PS: Sorry for the shitty image. I was more interested in seeing the items than photographing them.

correct. Egypt will continue to destroy their history. Hell America has started too.

The UK is silly. They had Cod Wars with Iceland. 3 in total. Iceland basically told the UK to get bent. 3 different times.

This is a bullshite claim. Lots of stolen art has been returned. It remains a case by case basis.

These specific pieces of art were pillaged and have an existing place from where they came and could be replaced and seen in their original setting. A much better environment for their presentation.

I respect this opinion too and it’s certainly and interesting topic to discuss.

Easy fix. A rotating exchange of artifacts between the countries.

Of course you have to trust the other country.

Op should do more research on this. They weren’t purchased so much per se as Lord
Elgin simply bribed an Ottoman potentate to let him plunder the artifacts. At the time it was highly controversial in England that Elgin should have taken these. It remains today.

Wish they had been able to save one of those Buddhist mountain statues in Afghanistan before the taliban destroyed them
