TLDR/I’m obviously having a crisis/I suck

Mid 1970’s . Bad News Bears era. Not travel ball era. Three Day weekend of some kind . Little league baseball tournament- you win you play on. The whole team camping out at one of the player’s houses- little kids eating hamburgers and talking shite around a campfire. Waking up early and playing and winning and winning and winning for two days until they hand you the trophy and you think you are Yaz or Stargell or César Cedeño. And then the young version of your Pops takes you for a hot dog and a snow cone and all is right in the world.

No amount of hookers and coke and piles of cash and rock and roll could match the simple pleasure of being a kid playing ball. Those were the days.

Those were the days..!!!

Dixie Youth baseball allstars in the mid 70’s...

Played at Lakeshore playground in Metry.. Biggest rival was Girard...

We were playing for parish championship, both had 1 loss a piece, to each other.. Winner won it all..

They were beating us by a few runs, but we came back only to lose by 1. Cried my eyes out, thought it was the end of the world, worse thing was getting that stupid runner-up trophy. Man, talk about simpler times..

Had a girlfriend who would always wear a cap I gave her to all of our games..

We spent a large portion of our childhood in the late 80’s/early 90’s at the ball parks in St Bernard.

Good post.

Dixie Youth product here.

I still remember the sting of striking out swinging, two on base, one behind. Bottom of the 9th.

Still got a chilli dog.

No Runner Up trophy.

I think the genre is called "ubi sunt" from the Latin,

quote:

Ubi sunt (literally "where are... [they]") is a phrase taken from the Latin Ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt?, meaning "Where are those who were before us?" ... Sometimes interpreted to indicate nostalgia, the ubi sunt motif is actually a meditation on mortality and life's transience.

I used to swim in the Delaware river. With a friend.
Among other qualities, enormous when you are 12 or 14.
Ocean going ships from Venezuela carrying iron ore to Bethlehem steel, r.i.p.

We swam knowing we would be chopped up by the prop if we were sucked in.
Mile badges when we were 12.
I swear we both had quite a kick to get to the bouy before Ms Venezuela comes by.

Kids in my neighborhood grew up on the ballfields. It was a remarkable childhood

Sad to see travel ball ruining the neighborhood leagues.
In the old days, we were given responsibility earlier, but were able to be kids longer.

Here’s the thing: you’re an adult now and - with some determination - can rediscover joys as good as (or almost as good as) those you experienced as a kid.

But you have to take control and make it happen for yourself. Find your passion, rediscover what it feels like to love. Life is too short to just stand on the escalator if you know what I mean.

Whoa, let's not get too carried away now. Kidding.

The older you get, the more you realize the sanctity of youth and simple pleasures.

There were summers where it seemed like every day, all day, my friends and I were playing baseball or football. It didn’t matter if it was 105 outside.

My dad played in a softball league that played at different playgrounds, no matter what playground they play at, I always seemed to play in a pick up game of football or baseball with the local kids...
