Hopefully they will change their name to the Linemen when they move.

That costume isn't related to the Babycakes. It belongs to the Pelicans.

I haven't been to one of their games in 10 years. It's boring as all hell.

It is in terrible shape and probably a part of the reason for the move

The stadium is in great shape , but the problem is the location. It's not in a good place on Airline highway out in the suburbs. A lot of AAA tams have gotten stadiums close to the downtown area if not right in downtown like in Memphis. When you are in Autozone park in Memphis surrounded by the buildings of downtown you at least get the feel of a big league stadium. Also you get more people just happening to go to the games with one downtown.....they leave and hit the other local establishments.
Zephyr field has nothing else around it, so people don't go

When the ball park opened in 1997, the Zephyrs were good, and had some really good up-and-coming Astros players, as well as a few guys yo-yo-ing. They were good, the following year they were even better.
People came out, and routinely sold out the place, especially on Friday nights. This was due to novelty, a brand new ball park where the tickets were inexpensive, the concessions were reasonable, parking only $3.00, and the game entertaining. The fanbase was mostly Metairie, so it was a good location.
Then comes 2000 and the Astros bail to reward Nolan Ryan for his loyalty and sign his Round Rock Express as their new AAA affiliate. Since then, New Orleans has been through the Mets, the Nats, and now the woeful Marlins organization. Is it any wonder?
The organization and the state have done quite well in renovating the facility over the last two or three years, it really is in good shape. It's comfortable minus the heat of summer, it's easy to move around, the restrooms are clean and big, parking is easy.
I love all the downtown parks and the new./old trend. But it's anywhere from $10.00 to $20.00 to park in the Central Business District of New Orleans on a normal night. Then to pay to go out after, I'm not up for dropping $100.00 to see the Miami Marlins AAA affiliate play ball. Sorry. It's not the stadium that's the problem.
It's New Orleans summer heat, it's New Orleans disconnect with baseball, as a whole, other than, say, Cubs, Braves, Astros. It's a vicious circle, New Orleans isn't a baseball town say so many of us, and it's a self-defeating prophesy. Few show up, thus the entertainment can get lame with so few people. Nothing is as funny as a dizzy bat race when you have even 3,000 or 4,000 in the park. With 500? It's lame, as are all the other in-between innings races and such. But what can you do with two minutes?
It's kind of sad. Maybe AA ball will bring some excitement, interest and prospects.

The stadium is nice, comfortable, and has good sight lines. Very good baseball stadium with plenty of parking. The problem is the franchise decided to move the team two years ago so they inflicted us with this horrible nickname in hopes of dwindling attendance to justify moving it somewhere else.

Agreed. Charlotte has legit new stadium right in the middle of downtown.

I get what you are saying, the problem was building the stadium out in Jefferson to start out with.....there were places downtown that they could have gotten in the mid 1990's in the city for a song.
I was going to add that the lack of a consistent affiliation to a close team has been a problem. In Memphis, the Redbirds are the Cardinals AAA affiliate.St Louis is 4 hours away.....and the Cardinals actually come in and play the Redbirds right before the start of the regular season.....of course, the Cardinals are a well run organization.

The trend was still new. When the Zephyrs came in 1993, Camden Yards was only four years old. The season ticket base, at that time, driving out to U.N.O. had to have been predominantly Metairie and West Bank. Add to that the the state was buying the land and were wanting to give the Saints a practice facility, as well.
The Astros came in once or twice in the 1990s, they played LSU once, too, during the height of Gorilla Ball. We never saw the Nats or the Mets, but the Marlins came once a few years ago. Stanton cleared the left field entertainment area quite easily, and probably cleared the drainage ditch out near Airline Highway.
One of the REAL death knells for this franchise occurred when Rob Couhig decided to run for office and had to sell his interest. Say what you will about his politics, his personal mannerisms, or what have you, he LOVED this franchise. The organization weathered the loss of Jay Miller, the G.M. once they moved out to Metairie. But once Rob Couhig left, that was it. It was a slow decline from then on. Walt Leger seemed a good guy, but he wasn't as interesting or engaging to keep the club moving forward as Rob was. :(

I used to love going to games in the 90's when they played at UNO.

When I was on a Southwest plane last month, their in-flight magazine had an article on a new independent league club in Napa. A lot of the article was about the owner's personal involvement in the club. AAA is a ways away from independent league, but I still think you need an involved owner to be truly successful.

Been to 2 games in my life. One in a suite and one on the front row behind home plate. Both for free.
No desire to go other than those 2 times and definitely not since the name change.

It's less than than 10 minutes from downtown unless rush hour.
The location is perfect for its target audience- suburban families. It would be beyond idiotic to put it downtown. There would be 13 hipsters there just to be ironic about the stupid mascot name.
Games used to be very well attended in that Metairie location. The ownership began dropping the ball on marketing, promotions, etc. It also didnt help that the team hasn't been very good. When they won the AAA World Series 20 years ago and for years after that, the games were packed, even in the mid summer heat. It was a great, inexpensive place to take the family in a safe, fun atmosphere - an easy drive for most of East Jefferson residents.
