Any local lore of these events and was anyone ever proven to be the slayer?

Never heard anything about it growing up. Nobody caught. Some people wanted to blame a grocer. I don't think it's significant in NO culture. Podcasters desperate for material have dredged it up recently.

Something you occasionally hear about.

Comes off as some social experiment of its time that has been drug up. Not sure anyone has actually done the leg work to prove the story other than media accounts.

Two innocent men were convicted. One of the victims lied about the attack, her husband (also a victim) claimed the two men were innocent and divorced his wife.
They were eventually released when she recanted.

Check out The Mad Gasser of Mattoon when you're done looking into the Axeman.

You only hear about it on Haunted History tours.
Otherwise it’s not a part of NOLA culture really.

Jack The Ripper and Lizzie Borden became iconic
An American Tragedy, Postman Always Rings Twice, Rope, The Fugitive, Badlands et al... were all based on actual cases. Why wasn't the Axeman given the same treatment?
