Well, you're wrong, but it is a popular misconception.
From Gallup:
And thats just 401k stuff...

Not my business but I believe there is a huge chunk of our society that isn't saving a penny for retirement and expecting the government to fund their retirement.
This is the conclusion I've reached. There's no way they are saving for retirement.

Car is a little over a year old, no car payment, paid cash.

2004 Chevy Silverado. Payment was $234 a month. Must’ve been a single cab base model.
In case you weren’t aware, the price of the vehicle isn’t always the determining factor as to how much the monthly note will be. Trade ins and the cash down payment as well as length of loan, etc matter.

I know I make more than that, have the advantage of a mortgage payment that's based on pre-2020 craziness, and utilize the local public schools (which are good). Given that and the proportion of families in the area who clearly live well above our standard (i.e. constant vacations, kids in private schools, two new $80k+ vehicles, etc.)
You keep tabs on how many families in your area are taking vacations and where they are going? What the frick?

My baby Braxlynn wanted the newest, most gigantic Karen-ish Infiniti SUV on the lot and I’ll be damned if she doesn’t get what she wants. Financed that baby for 96 months and the dealership even threw in a backyard batting cage for our son Gunnar

My wife and I max out. We both carry a car note. We both have student loans. We have a mortgage.
All that crap is way less than 50% of our income.
Not everybody with car notes are idiots. My cash works harder then the 0% we pay financing it.

Yeah, so stating that one has a $234 car payment in 2004 means nothing without context as I said previously…. We’re missing some details.

The OT thinks if you have a new car you're an idiot.
The OT thinks 50% of Americans are bankrupt.
The OT thinks if you give to your church you're a sucker.
The OT is wrong.
A lot.
They say completely wrong shite with authority, though, I'll give 'em that.

I been reading this site for 20 years. Most of the folks on this site are absolutely ridiculous when it comes to finances.

Don't they have decent internet connection at the library you post from?
Use it to Google some basic facts about finance.

no fricking shite! I’ve rarely run across such a clueless bunch (on subjects that I’m very familiar with,) make such ignorant, idiotic statements with such conviction

I’ve never had a car payment. Always settled for what I could actually afford. I couldn’t imagine being that greedy on top of paying anything more than legally required minimum liability insurance.
