The amount of regular Junk mail is getting out of hand

I haven't checked my mailbox in a week. I do everything online so I don't need to check it everyday.
Instead of going after BS industries for climate change, they need to go after the Junk Mail industry. I probably had 100+ pieces of mail of nothing but junk. Times that by 350 million people, that's a lot of wasted trees and energy to make the envelopes, paper, etc. to just get thrown away.

Yep. Bring in 20+ pieces of mail and throw all of it away immediately, except an occasional bill that I put in a box, to never look at again.

I’m convinced it’s all a Ponzi scheme because the USPS couldn’t survive without it … so they protect and encourage the junk
you would think the climate change Nazis would be all over 1) saving paper and 2) saving fuel to not deliver all this crap … but I guess the USPS per project ranks higher on their activist scale (remember their freak out over Trump and the postal service)

Some fellas made a startup to digitize mail several years ago and had a pretty good operation. Part of the appeal was it would stop people from having to deal with junk mail. It got shot down by the post office because they openly stated that regular citizens weren't the customers, the companies that spend inordinate amounts of money to send you bullshite are their customers. Them carrying our mail around is just something they do in the free space on their trucks.

Funny, I just posted the reasoning behind it. Also it's the only part of the federal government where they get bitched at for losing so much money but can't do a single thing to operate like an actual business. So they do whatever they can (take in a frickload of junk mail).

Direct mail marketing is effective. Lots of advertisers generate significant revenue as a result. It helps them employ workers who can then support their families. Along with jobs, demand is created for whatever services & products are being sold creating more jobs for those businesses. Their vendors also can pay employees, etc, etc.
USPS is not the only beneficiary.

I go to the mailboz once a week and take everything in it and toss it directly into the garbage can that I wheel down to the curb twice a week. Been doing it for about 10 years and never missed an important piece of mail yet. I do read the senders address and if there appears to be a credit card in it I will open it to get rid of the card if it is a card but usually I never even open about 98% of it.

I never understand “getting out of hand” threads about things that have been out of hand for literally YEARS .

The weird thing is they stop sending it after someone dies. Not right away, but eventually it subsides. It's like they know

For home service businesses - it is actually very effective for roofers, painters, etc,. But for all the other garbage, it's just junk.

Think it's bad now, wait until you decide to retire, go on Medicare and start looking for supplemental insurances to cover the rest. Not only will your snail mail box be full, so will your e-mail box and expect a spike in robo-calls from insurance companies.
I'm past it now, but the wife just applied for Medicare and it's starting all over again.

The USPS makes too much off of the junk mail to put an end to it. It would put a huge dent in their operation.
I would gladly pay a $25/year or so fee to not have to get junk mail.

The junk mail that bothers me is from my Senators and Representatives. A laundry list of every bill proposed and passed. From each one. All proclaiming credit.
We pay for it. A waste Kind of along the Teedy level mailing.

If you think that it's bad now, wait until next year, with the elections. The PO practically lets them send out mailers for free in exchange for political favors.

I find if you leave the mailbox full they'll only shove in the important things

They put some of those political mailers all under the flags and they end up just littering the street.
