And I don't mean the videos of people walking out of the stores in CA with arms full of clothes

For all the making fun of those videos we do here, the truth is that a huge portion of society steals just in different ways.

I started selling on Amazon about 4 months ago and the attempts of people to steal are staggering. The most common is an item not recieved claim or people swapping out their broken item for a new one and returning the old one.

I dealt with a Doctor today (I looked him up) who made an INR claim for a $400 product despite UPS taking pictures of the delivery. Amazon refunded him but did not count it against me but that's only because I shipped through them. Had I bought shipping not through Amazon I would be out the $400.

I also dealt with one woman returning a broken superglued piece. She obviously used the item she bought from me and sent back her old one. Just a real piece of human garbage.

I sell some stuff FBA (fulfilled by Amazon) and some FBM (fulfilled by merchant) and both are subject to fraud but FBA is worse and costs more to fight.

I read the Amazon seller forums almost daily and the amount of scams people have going on is staggering. People are returning rocks and other trash so the return package shows weight for when Amazon investigates a seller complaining about a return. Also, according to many long-time sellers on the forums, this is the worst it's ever been as more and more people feel emboldened that they will get away with it. There is a whole forum on Reddit dedicated to sharing tips on how to scam Amazon and make INR claims.

When an item is returned through FBA Amazon does not even check it or open it. They move it to unfillable inventory for which the seller has to request Amazon either dispose of it, send it back to you to inspect, or sell it for pennies in a return pallet auction so a lot of times you don't even know if its fraud unless you pay to have Amazon send the product back to you. Even then, you still have an uphill battle of ever getting any money back for a fraudulent return.

I know inflation is OOC but I now wonder how much price increases are to offset the rise in theft and fraud.

In short, the vast majority of people steal just in different forms. Scamming on Amazon is no different than the videos we see of people walking into a store and just taking stuff yet I wonder how many people scamming on Amazon would do that and/or look down on people who do it. There really is no difference between the two.

Not sure how you combat the Amazon stuff... you can return anything on Amazon.

I also sell on Walmart and eBay and neither of them has the problem Amazon does with fraud. This is also the sentiment of other sellers on the forums.

It's a problem Amazon has created for themselves.

So when we say it's "culture", it's applied to all races now? I'm confused. I think we need a word for every race.

This is why I only use reputable sites like Facebook Marketplace.

Oddly enough, the times I have sold off old tools or stuff locally on FB marketplace were pretty smooth

I've wondered if Amazon keeps track of how many times a buyer claims to not having received an item and/or the item is received broken.

Do you know if Amazon monitors those stats by individual buyer?

That did happen but I think Amazon put a stop to it. The rest I agree with.

I have read stories of Amazon prosecuting habitual offenders that they were able to investigate over time. I think if you do it a few times a year you will fly under the radar.

Even though Amazon did not charge me for the claim today I still will file an IC3 claim on the FBIs site in hopes of making him sweat. If it had been through the USPS I would file a claim with the US Postal inspector.

I agree. My work sells a product online, and we can verify receipt of item by the user, but if they file a chargeback with their CC company, we lose the dispute 80% of the time even when providing evidence, plus not only do we lose the sale, the user keeps the item, but we get hit with a chargeback fee.

It's still happening according to the forums. One seller last week said he had someone's actual garbage returned to him instead of the item.

I hate that people are doing this and have very little chance of getting caught or punished.

Luckily I have only one little story...
Went to Autozone last week to get a windshield crack repair kit. I get home and go to open the container and some lowlife had cut it open with a razor blade and taken the resin out and glued it back together.
They gave me no issues on doing a swap out for a new kit, but annoying to have to deal with.

So to offset that I imagine your company had to raise their prices?

I haven't done that nor do I plan on doing it.

I've just wondered how much Amazon monitors individual buying and return habits.

I've only had to claim a broken item once and a non-delivery twice from Amazon.

Amazon required me to send them a photo of the broken item which I did along with a photo of the Amazon box it came in that was crushed on one side. They didn't bother asking me to return it. Not worth paying the return shipping I assumed.

Both times I was refunded or sent another item immediately.

Doesn't matter. There are literal millions of YT'ers and other social media" reviewers that buy like ten items and return most of them after their reviews.

This actually helps the sellers. Do you think someone would buy 10 cordless compound miter saws to review and keep them all - or try and sell them used on FB marketplace. Especially, the low scoring saws.

I think the best avenue is if you are being ripped off on Amazon and losing actual revenue then try FBM, eBay, MeWe, or NextDoor. There are a ton of competitors to Amazon IMO.
