I often say it when I cross paths with someone wearing a cap or shirt displaying their former service. It is almost always an older gentleman. Why would they display the gear if they were not proud of it and want the recognition.

We'd show more thanks to them by forcing our government and military to fund the VA appropriately.
Saw the other day that Illegals were being treated, in VA Hospitals, ahead of veterans.
That whole deal is embarrassing.

Why?

Don't find it patronizing at all. Most people are just being nice and it is just a nice gesture. TBH I don't really like the Veterans that go around in tacticool clothes and advertising thier service to the world and seeking attention. It is like MFer you was an 88M in the National Guard and didn't even deploy. (If you didn't deploy don't get your panties in a wad your service is still valuable).I am also not saying that you can't be proud of your service, but I am sure every veteran knows at least 1 of that guy I am talking about.

I say thank you to the older vets who are wearing caps that say Veteran. Not only do I figure that they don't mind the attention because otherwise they wouldn't be wearing the cap, but also because these older guys are usually Vietnam vets who were spit on and generally unrecognized for decades. My Dad was a Vietnam vet and I was with him the first time someone in public thanked him for his service and he teared up. So you can bet I thank all the old dudes.

You should thank Jody for his service too. He doesn't do it for fame and fortune, he toils to keep the wive's of service members satisfied. When you're off to war (or oil field or pipeline) Jody is working just as hard at home.

If they were really that special, they'd be people doctors.

How do random people know they’ve served?
You sit at a sports bar, watching the games, and it’ll come up every now and then over the span of a season.

My father "served" in WWII from June 1941 till August 1945 and referred to it as "when I was in the service", not "when I was in the Army", so I'm going to say, he would have would have felt honored to be told thank you for your service.

Good thing I’ve never told anyone that
Posted on 2/10/24 at 11:47 am to VooDude
I like to tell them "thank you for not burning down Atlanta."

No.
My dad finds it skin crawling awkward. lol
Gotta know my dad though. Anything remotely complimentary he will downplay.
Dad was drafted for Vietnam then got selected for training and became a medic but then shuffled to hospital work in Japan.
Because he can’t shoot for shite. His words not mine.

My wife’s grandfather wore his WWII veteran hat everyday until he died at 96 years old about 5 years ago. When we went out to eat or were in public he would be approached by a lot of people just thanking him. I could tell he absolutely loved it.

I took one semester of ROTC in college and I appreciate when others tell me thanks for my service on Veterans' Day.
I also enjoy posting about my dead family members who served, but were not killed in action, on Memorial Day.

Not at all. How in the hell is it patronizing? I take it as being a thank you for volunteering to do something for the country that they weren't willing to do. I take it as respect.
Maybe you need to look at yourself because apparently that is how you feel.

I don’t find it patronizing at all when someone says this to me. I see it as someone trying to be friendly and respectful. I’m sorry you’re so cynical and jaded you can’t accept courtesy from others.

I just want to thank you all for your service here today.

I don’t know if I find it patronizing. I guess they are just being nice.
