That's pretty much the only way to handle these kind of things anymore. Public apologies and long winded press releases just add more fuel to the fire and make everyone still associate you/the company with guilt and shame
Saying "frick it" and making light of the situation and self depricating takes away the fuel. If more did it this way it would put a huge dent in the cancel and outrage culture that made this a story to begin with
