Let's be honest. It was an extra day grab before a holiday. And no company is truly doing much of shite today anyway.

A lot of it has to do with multiple school system closures. The majority of state employees work in East Baton Rouge but their children are in three main school districts (EBR, LP & AP). When those kids are out of school state government is going to see a massive rash of folk not show up anyway because one day of unexpected daycare versus 8 hours of paid annual or, "sick," leave is nowhere near as expensive.
Add to that the fact that a ton of people probably took today and tomorrow off for the extended Holiday already, and what good does it do for 1 person to be in an office answering the phone telling folk that nobody is there today?
I had a nice peek at work in civil service for about a decade. Some of the wrap is 100% well deserved. But some of it isn't.

I think the blame is misdirected.
The problem with this post (and others like it) is that they assume there are plenty of private industry jobs in an area and that all people on public sector are lazy.
The truth is, unless you live in a medium to large city,there are limited private sector jobs. The public jobs (for better or worse) provide one of the few chances of opportunity in rural parts of the country.

I love how mad you are about this. You didn't even answer my question, just went right into calling me an idiot. This is going to be hard to comprehend but weather forecasts aren't 100% accurate, so sometimes inclement weather is projected but doesn't always happen. When really bad weather is projected, sometimes it's better to be safe. Factor in the holidays/school closures and it even makes more sense. Wild, I know.

years ago there was a freak ice storm at DFW that was a lot worse than the forecast predicted, many flights were cancelled/delayed, and several million dollars of damage was done to aircraft engines, the guy in charge of making the decision for the flights to operate or not was fired, a year or so later another ice storm was forecast for the DFW area, the new guy preemptively cancelled hundreds of flights, creating quite a backlash of expense and logistics snafu, the weather never came, dude was canned, sometimes you just can't win
