The Appalachian Mountains are far superior to the Hill Country.

I bought a 1930s house that didn't even have central A/C over 15 years ago, along w the lot next door and lucked out replatting it back to original parcels and sold the half acre just before the crash. I stopped working on my house in 08 and am just now starting back. It's nice to be the crappiest house on the street.

We've gone through periods where we rent it out and live in Kirkwood. We now rent out Kirkwood and an in-law suite in our house to a friend who's never there. Definitely not a baller. I did have a chance to join Druid Hills for $20k when they had it ripped up. I can't afford golf balls though.

ETA: oh and I picked Atlanta because the starting salaries for lawyers we approximately 2x what they were in New Orleans at the time and my dad has recently moved there for a gig. I bought a house in MT in 2005 so I could escape the city. I have a love-hate relationship w Atlanta. Dad is on Tybee island now. In-laws in SC. Mom in BR and other family strewn about the country.

Having the busiest airport in the world helps. But I've been trying to shut down Atlanta operations since I moved there. I need some elevation or beach if I'm going to be in the south.

Anyone who thinks “Hill country” is something to write home about hasn’t really experienced the “outdoors”

It’s been stated repeatedly that the hill country is near San Antonio and only a couple hours from Houston. Now, you might not like the hill country but that’s your personal preference.

I am, and I have to pretty much agree, Hill country is OK, but in the comparison that the OP puts forth it pales greatly

I think there are prettier portions of Georgia that are more accessible than the more scenic portions of Texas. But to start a life and raise a family it’s hard to beat Texas for stable economy, good schools and things to do. Either choice is good.

Even if you're correct, it doesn't matter; Texas is full. Georgia is your only option.

You're better off not knowing what an HEB is anyway since you can't have one.

I mean even someone who has made it to northern New Mexico (or virtually anywhere west of Nebraska) would understand what I said...i guess if you consider that “really well traveled”...

Say whaaaatttttt? Depending on where you live in Atlanta metro area, you’re 2 hours away from the mountains where you can camp, hike, white water raft and many other outdoor activities. Texas is flat so if you like being outdoors where it’s flat, then Texas is the place.

I live in DFW and do love it and would not go back to GA, but GA does have Texas beat for outsdoors stuff. Texas has more variety probably because it is huge but because it is huge for me to get from here to see El Paso, if there is anything to see, it would be farther than going from most of GA to say, VA. TX is just 4 eastern states joined together.

I don't like the dry arid mountains out west as much as GA's lush green ones either.

As for picking one or the other, nobody can say one is "better" because so many people move to both. The choice depends on personal factors.

Pick whichever one is closer to family. Even if you don't see them much, that helps for the holidays when you probably want to.

Plenty of hood parts in Atlanta so watch out. Just as bad as NBR.

I say go with TX.

Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee, never knew how much that muddy water meant to me.
It’s where I learned how to swim. Learned who I was. A lot about living and a little about love.

Tough call. Houston is much closer to the beach than Atlanta though.

South Georgia dominant demographic is poor black single moms.

South Texas is Mexico.
