They do DNA testing or some kind of test that tells them if it’s a local fish or not. Not sure how that works with a stocked lake though.

Seems like a better way to cheat would be bringing some big fish beforehand and have them in a cage or stringer somewhere on the lake and then just go haul them in during the tourney. Do people ever try that?

Yes.

30 years ago at False River, they caught a guy doing that. Had a cage hooked on a pier. I think it was a night tournament, if memory serves correctly. He pulled up and dumped them in his live well, and someone saw it happen.

So let’s be real generous and say 1/3 of cheaters get caught. How many of these amateur bass tournaments are legit?

People do that in local pond fishing tournaments, no way to really catch them

Lots of rednecks will sell their integrity for beer joint bragging rights and $500

Mike Long. Won a bunch of money as a cheater doing this over many years I believe. Was well known for "catching" big bass. Fun story to read up on.

don't much about the bass fishing tour but I used to have a neighbor who was trying to break into that and fished a lot of tournaments, real nice, laid back dude, lots of fun to hang around with, he asked if I wanted to go fishing with him once to "practice" for an upcoming tournament, once was enough, he was Jekyl and Hyde once he got on the water, very, aggressive, short tempered and restless, was not fun. at all

I work with a guy that competes in tournaments a lot and has even won a grand prize new truck and boat before. He says ppl getting caught cheating happens more than you would think. He says when you win a tournament they give the winners get put threw lie detector test.

I’ve seen it all….

Baskets full of fish hanging off a tree or dock.

Bass tied to stumps that the guy actually caught in the tourney after tying them up.

Starting off with a big limit by converting another compartment to a livewell

Cutting/clipping tails in a slot lake so the fish wouldn’t be in the slot

Guy fell asleep/passed out during the lie detector test because he ODd on sleep medication to keep his heart rate down for the test. (This was the best one).

Most guys that get caught have been doing it long enough for people to get suspicious. Supposedly this a-hole has won several ‘biggest under the slot’ prizes over the years in these type events. It’s sort of clever as most people only pay attention to the overall big bass when ‘biggest under’ flies under the radar but prize is usually just as good.

Years ago, on the lake I frequent, there was about a 2X4X2ft cage in the back of a cove for that very reason. You could easily see it when the water was low. You could always tell when bass came out of a cage cause they looked beat to shite. Scales missing, etc.

The cage is no longer there. Or maybe it has been relocated. I dunno.

So, wait, the lie detector test is a true thing?

Yep, know of one that would “cage” trout prior to a tournament and trim tails, used jiffy muffin cornbread mix to add weight. Threatened to kill employees of Cca in Baton Rouge when his wife’s trout was DQ’d for the Star tournament. Threatened to injure weighmasters and members of the Salt tournament in port Arthur.
He was/is a total piece of shite.

A lot of your bigger ‘local’ trails with a lot of prize money will lie detector the overall winner, but people have learned how to pass them. They basically go down the list of rules. I’ve even known some tourney’s let people that fail off the hook to protect the sanctity of the tourney if they didn’t feel the rule broken was a huge deal.

A lot of trails say you may be subject to one, but it costs a lot of money and they really can’t afford to do it.

I never would have thought one could be arrested cheating in a fishing contest. Kicked out, sure. Banned, sure. Learned something new.

Absolutely true, you’re talking big prizes. My co worker won a tournament in Texas. So much cash money a new Ram truck and a new bass boat. People will do a lot to win. Cheating at that level is fraud.
