I agree with the premise but this is the parents responsibility, not the governments.

I absolutely do not want any government having any say whatsoever in how I raise my kids and I dont give a shite who's in government doing it.

Matt Dillion said it best, "You can't start telling a man how to raise his own son."

I agree, but I also don't think it should be legal for kids under 18 to drink, smoke cigarettes, or get tattoos.

I think social media might be worse than all of those.

Now not banning Facebook is loony, got it. Some of you must have wet dreams about living in a government state

Texas legislature has been a lefty tear lately.
Texas is getting oretty close to cooked status if this tempo keeps up.

That’s a complete exaggeration, and you are making this claim on a proposed bill in the house that wants to require certain companies to verify anyone creating an account with them is 18 or older. I have seen anything directed towards the kids or parents.

The Texas legislature has problems in the house due to a group of Republicans teaming with Dems to win the Speaker vote, but it still doesn’t have the votes to vote left.

Government over reach much? Are they playing the job of parents now???

Do you think having an age limit for cigarettes and alcohol is government overreach? Social media is harmful to kids.

Car wrecks are harmful for kids, verbal abuse is harmful to kids, an a-hole parent is harmful to kids, junk food is harmful to kids….

I mean, what does this actually solve?

Bullying? They’ll find other ways.

Life comparing? They’ll find other ways.

Attention spans? They’ll find other things.

This does nothing except give legislators a chance to pat themselves on the back and say they’ve rescued the children while simultaneously taking another decision out of parents’ hands.

It's a state law, not a federal law. And you understand that kids start trying to download VPNs in sixth grade to get around content filters at school, right? S

No shite it’s a state law.

Texas bill: under 18 banned from social media

And So what on VPN’s. That’s more proof that this law is not overbearing and that it is focused on the company verifying account creator being old enough, and for most part that’s going to require a paid service which get increasingly more difficult the younger a kid is. Any increase in difficulty is superior to the current ease at which kids can get on social media and get targeted by social media companies. My only problem with it is the non-standardized process to verify age with a 3rd party company. I would rather the bill exclude the uploading of DLs as a means of a company just finding out if person is 18 or above or is not.

Throwing a kid an iPad to shut them up to watch cartoons is probably more destructive than kids going after each other on social media,
Neither are great, but stating watching cartoons to distract a kid for a little while is more destructive that kids going after each other on social media is absolutely BS.

social media companies would be banned from allowing people in Texas under 18-years-old to create accounts
So they’ll just create an account when they go on a vacation out of state.

Or is Texas going to make the social media companies require age verification whenever someone from out of state visits Texas and opens a social media app?

Do you believe that alcohol and cigarettes should be available for kids to purchase?

True, so is alcohol. But I trust adults to limit themselves and limit harm more than I do children.

Probably this, this is what they did with porn. If it’s only to create accounts, then it’s too easy to get around.

I think both of those have calculable and measurable effects on kids, social media does not.

But that isn’t what you said, you said they’re all bad, implying they should be banned by the government. Well, the things I listed are bad to, so what’s the threshold? Just whatever Epic Cajun or the government deems acceptable? Seems like a slippery slope

Social media is bad for kids.
Government regulating who and who can’t be on social media is worse imo.

With that said it should be a parent or school restricting it, not the government.

Why (and how) should a parent or school be able to legally force a social media company to verify that the creators of accounts on their respective platforms are 18 or over?

That’s what this proposed bill does. It’s focused on requiring the social media companies to verify that adults are creating social media accounts on their platforms.

There are plenty of studies that show the negative effects of social media on kids.

I also said that social media is “harmful” not “bad”. If you’re going to argue that it isn’t harmful then you are stupider than I thought.

Restricting the use for their child/students. Obviously during the day for the students.
