As the Texas power grid collapsed under a historic winter storm, Jose Del Rio of Haltom City, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, saw the electricity bill on a vacant two-bedroom home he is trying to sell slowly creep up over the past two weeks. Typically, the bill is around $125 to $150 a month, he said. But his account has already been charged about $630 this month — and he still owes another $2,600. “If worse comes to worst, I have the ability to put it on a credit card or figure something out," Del Rio said. ”There is no one living in that house. All the lights are off. But I have the air at 60 because I don’t want the pipes to freeze.”

Griddy's prices are controlled by the market, and are therefore vulnerable to sudden swings in demand. With the extreme weather, energy usage has soared, pushing up wholesale power prices to more than $9,000 per megawatt hour — compared to the seasonal average of $50 per megawatt hour.

quote:

Royce Pierce and his wife, Danielle, who live in Willow Park, west of Dallas, have been watching their electricity bill tick up by nearly $10,000 in the last few days for their three-bedroom home. While the family told NBC News they consider themselves lucky because they’ve had power, the financial burden has come with additional challenges. Since the family is on a variable rate plan with Griddy, the company automatically debits the bill as they use electricity. Danielle said she closed the debit card connected to their electricity bill because Griddy wiped it out. The family has been using separate accounts and credit cards to pay for necessities as the storm goes on.

What a shitshow. I cannot imagine the stress that is placing on these families.

Some times I guess capitalism has its down sides.. Maybe I will win the lottery so I can pay my electric bill and health insurance.

So I just got my January bill and these people already got a bill for this week?

There is a lot here that doesn’t make sense

It’s worth meationing the company reached out to their customers advising them to drop them and get under a new provider last week.

If you considered personal responsibility a downside I suppose you’re right these high electric bills are because people were playing the market and not locking in a rate.

I have a locked in rate of $0.123 per KWH, that is what I pay period. For me to get a boll in the thousands I would have to be burning a shite ton of electric.

Now if I played the spot game my avg KWH in most times could be lower, maybe even 1/2 as much. But I did a risk analysis and usage analysis and determined that locking in at .123 was a safer play.

Those people did not, they took the risk + lower price and now they are paying for it.

It is like bitching because same-day airfare is higher than the 21-day advanced airfare. It is but that is the risk you take. Accept the L and move on.

They enjoyed the really low prices for months and years and they knew the risks.

I would never choose that variable rate plan.

Yes, Texas has lots of electric providers. When I lived there we actually used a company called energy ogre that would automatically change your plan to a different provider each month depending on the electric rates being used.

I would be interested in hearing what these folks usually pay for power during other "normal" weather periods per month.

In Houston, CenterPoint owns the infrastructure but is not allowed to sell directly to the consumer. Consumers deal with power brokers who compete with each other.

It’s very simple to shop/change your plan with power to choose.org. Most people don’t bother to research the different plans and/or don’t understand what they’re looking at. I assume folks with the ridiculous bills were either on a variable rate plan or a pre paid option. Energy Ogre works for some I guess, not for me. I lock a fixed rate in for 2-3 yrs, so not paying a monthly fee to ogre.

They can choose how to pay, they are gambling going with a direct market rate that is often cheaper than traditional energy sellers charge but with the risk that they will have to pay more during times of high demand. From what I understand sometimes electricity is essentially free for periods of time under these market price models of billing, but looks like that sword cuts both ways.

My Entergy bill was cut on Wednesday after the cold snap.

The bill was around 230 for an elevated old South Louisiana house.

I just downloaded the Entergy App and saw that my daily usage Monday and Tuesday was the peak of the cold and I used about 180 kWH each day. Just those 2 days represent about 30 dollars for my March billing period which ended Wednesday.

If you do the math, that will come out to just over 8 cents per kWH.

It’s the same thing as student loans why should people who are responsible and pay their electricity bills on time bail these people out.
