I understand Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon being absurdly profitable companies making their top shareholders some of the richest people in the world.
And I get that Tesla and SpaceX are profitable, but how is it they are to the point that they make Elon the richest guy ever? A trillionaire?
Billions of people own iPhones. Microsoft and Amazon have their cloud services and Amazon is pretty much the ruler of internet commerce.
What is it about Tesla that makes Elon so rich?
It's stock market rich, not cash in the bank rich. Elon doesn't sell off his shares for money, he acquires more. I used to think of you as a semi-intelligent person. Is your question sincere or a troll?

I’m jealous of him having evil genius level money.

If only he would buy one of the major networks and do like Twitter

Honestly I'd trust a trillion dollars in Elon's hands before anyone else's.

How can Tesla expect such ridiculous valuation?
They don’t come close to the total sales of someone like Ford but their valuation is over 1 trillion while Ford is around 50bn

Tesla is not a car company. The market values it as one of the most cutting edge technology companies in the world.
The company stock price and thus most of elon’s net worth is tied to the potential of scaling up full self driving tech, robotaxies, robotics, etc etc.
However all of these things that make it a “Microsoft-level” company have not fully materialized yet. FSD, Robotaxi - these are still in development but the market understands the potential with Elon’s execution prowess hence why it’s valued at $1T.

Only one company has solved self driving, what's the value of that alone? There's a ton of reasons they're on a different plane than other car manufacturers.

First of all, did you read the OP, at all? This compensation is directly related to market capitalization- he gets more stock if the company is worth more. It’s just a matter of math at that point, the largest shareholder of an $8T company would be a trillionaire. Among other sales targets he would also need to deliver 1M robots to market in order to do this. So it’s very much forward looking.
Second, Tesla has multiple revenue streams, within their cars and beyond. They are basically a battery and charging company and are the class leader. They also have the largest charging network for EVs, so they are like a power compan/gas station network (recurring revenue on what basically amounts to a utility).

Beyond what you’ve listed, data and robotics. Shareholders have also approved Tesla’s ability to invest in XAI, which can leverage all that data.

Good luck to him, but I am not sure it will happen.

Exactly. People are freaking out about the proposed compensation, but aren't looking at the high bar he's got to get over to achieve it.

Well, he said he would be producing 250k cybertrucks/year. YTD sales, 16k.
