Ask yourself this the next time you are waiting for an hour + at the gas station 3 days before landfall and praying (a) you don't get shot because someone thinks you're cutting the line and (b) there is still gas coming out of the pump when it's your turn.

There is an awful lot of hyperbole in your post.
I’ve never had a problem filling up before a suspected evacuation. I’ve never had a line more than three cars, and I’ve never been in danger.

Good for Ford, but old people have problems climbing into a vehicle

Ponders how Lexus compares to an old Buick. When they stopped making Buick sedans, drove BOTH Lexus and BMW and neither was equal to the old Buick.

They stopped making the longer Avalon's

They stopped making the shorter Hybrid Avalon's

Drove both in the past and both were better at cabin noise when I drove them than the top end Lexus at the time.

The EV also discharges with the AC.

It only uses about 1% of the capacity per hour of running. The AC systems are pretty efficient.

I doubt EVs are going to get you farther in an evacuation. I suspect it is the other way round.
The EV will stay closer to true range than the ICE. The ICE is idling the engine which consumes fuel, then still has additional load from the compressor that further increases fuel consumption. You have to remember you're idling an engine with hundreds of horse power to keep a power steering pump, ac compressor, transmission oil pump, engine oil pump, etc going. It consumes significantly more energy just to stay on.

There's still downsides to the EV like charger availability but it's not the issue most think it is.

No doubt about this, but the ICE vehicle’s true range is far greater. Here is what ChatGPT says (substantiating some of both of our points)
quote:

There is an interesting reversal here: traffic itself isn’t particularly bad for an EV. EVs don’t have to keep a large engine running while stopped, regenerative braking recovers some energy, and electric motors are very efficient at low speeds. The penalty comes primarily from the fact that the cabin A/C is running for eight hours rather than two. Gasoline vehicles, meanwhile, continue consuming fuel whenever the engine is running even though the car may barely be moving. DOE notes that EVs commonly consume only about 25–40 kWh per 100 miles in normal use. Where the ICE vehicle has the real evacuation advantage It’s not necessarily the 135-mile trip itself. It’s what happens afterward. If power is out across the evacuation corridor or at your destination, an EV arriving with 30% charge might have only another 80–100 miles of usable driving available before it needs electricity. A gasoline vehicle arriving with 35% of a 16-gallon tank might similarly have only ~140 miles left—but you can carry additional gasoline and, once fuel deliveries resume, a filling station can refuel hundreds of cars much more rapidly than a limited number of DC fast chargers can recharge them. That infrastructure issue is the vulnerability I would worry about during a major New Orleans hurricane evacuation: charger availability, electrical outages and queues, rather than the EV running out of power while sitting in traffic.

It gave a table of performance which was too awkward to paste here.It showed an EV with 300 mile advertised range compared to ICE with 400 miles. They both reached Lafayette from NOLA in 8 hours (I specified that) of stop and go traffic.

The weakness I see in the EV case is that the 400 miles of ICE range is probably accurate, whereas the EV range deteriorates with time and use. So this analysis is probably true for a new EV but it would get worse for the EV as it ages.

Well that's not the reality for many. Before and after Ida there were 2+ hour waits all over the nola metro area and gas deliveries across the metro area disrupted for well over a week after the storm.

I think at least 2 people were shot while waiting in gas lines, one in new orleans and one in metairie.

I should’ve phrased that better. You have 2 minutes before the update starts to cancel, coupled with the WiFi thing. Correct. It is non issue for me. I get a notification asking me if I’m okay with it and I accept only accordingly.

Okay. You think their behavior might have had something to do with it? A normal person is not getting shot waiting for gasoline. Plus, I don’t know why you think the EV folks can’t get shot waiting for chargers.

The person who was shot and killed in Metairie while waiting for gas after Ida was a normal citizen who got cut in front of as he was pulling up to the pump. The guy who cut the line then shot and killed him following a brief verbal argument.

The point remains that considering danger in filling up is irrational.

That sums it up pretty well. They each have their advantages and disadvantages but I wouldn't stress about either if i had to evacuate in our Tesla or my Lexus. It would get figured out.

Answering questions like, how long does it take to charge? Are you worried about a fire? Is that thing slow?

Tesla is hands down the best car I have ever owned. The features, free software updates, the speed, the ease of charging at the house, no more gas stations, etc.

You are probably driving around in a vehicle that has structural members that are glued together. In a lot of applications are superior to welding; one of the main reasons is it spreads the load across the entire joint, reducing the stress concentration.

While tragic, I don’t think that is worth considering

Just curious, but do gas stations work during an extended power outage?
