Tesla Model 3 Owner Thankful For His EV When Stuck On I-95

Tesla Model 3 owner Dan Kanninen writes, “I'm grateful that I was driving my EV when I got stuck on I-95.” We appreciate his precise use of words since it's not just Tesla's vehicles that will fare better than gas cars in such a situation, but virtually all electric cars.
Several media publications have published recent reports about people being stranded on Virginia's I-95 freeway. Following the reports, some people started a misinformation campaign stating that if EV owners had been stuck on the freeway, they would have been "left out in the cold" when the battery quickly died.
We've already published an article debunking such nonsense. In addition, several people in the Tesla and EV community have put out articles and videos to prove that the misinformation isn't just wrong, but the exact opposite is actually true.
A gas-powered car will almost certainly run out of gas sooner than an EV will die from its battery fully discharging, though there are obviously many variables involved, such as how much gas is in the tank, the EV battery's state of charge, etc. Regardless, as the ICE owner sits and waits in their car, they're parked on top of dangerous exhaust fumes, which could cause health issues. Kanninen shared:
"No, the recent nightmare on Virginia’s I-95 would not have been worse if everyone had been driving electric vehicles instead of gas-powered vehicles. In fact, everyone would have had a far better experience if they had been driving an EV."
Kanninen points to the recent Washington Post op-ed that claims EVs may "have littered the highway for miles” if everyone was driving electric cars during such a traffic backup. However, Kanninen was stuck on I-95 for 14 hours in his Model 3 Standard Range as he watched ICE drivers burning gas to keep the cars running. Meanwhile, his Model 3 wasn't really "running" per se, but just using the battery pack to keep the cabin warm.
He was stuck for 14 hours without any issues while ICE owners had to worry about toxic fumes and running out of gas.
Another person did did his own experiment on how long these Teslas can keep you warm in a frozen traffic jam and here are the results:
A Model Y with full charge can last 36 hours:
A Model S with full charge can last 28 hours:

Ok they've convinced me. I'll ignore all the other shortcomings and buy one.

I predict this thread goes like every other EV thread.

What was the temperature OUTSIDE the car in those two tests?
How long could they keep the car 70F, if outside were 25F with a ten mile per hour wind?

Who's sticking their nose up the exhaust pipes?
I think this exhaust smell is a little over the top.

Mrs. Cotten and I have been full time in a Transit Extended for close to two years now. 500ah of Lifepo4 and 520w of solar on the roof.
In my opinion, the author of the article is fairly ignorant. Short term emergencies like the article describes is fine. I also understand not everyone is going to be “living” in their vehicle. However we know all too well the true challenge of relying solely on electric and solar power. Relying solely on battery power and solar is putting all the eggs in one basket, There’s a reason we keep a small inverter generator with us stowed away.
Electric cars are a great leap forward, however the author makes it seem like they’re a direct plug and play replacement for all ICE situations…and I will confidently say they are not.

Last time I checked, an ice storm is highly unlikely in 70 degree weather. How many hours of use will I get in those conditions?
TIA for making my 'stuck in a storm' experience far better

i'm all for more people driving EVs. means I dont have to. also wtf is "toxic fumes" lol
yep. you can tell how many people in Louisiana rely on the oil & gas industry.
Anybody that doesnt and honestly just doesnt wanna buy an EV should be encouraging everyone else to buy one. will mean more room for the rest of us on the highways and lower gas prices

Yes, but what if his batter pack spontaneously combusts under his but while sitting there.

About the same. The heaters in the Tesla are like having a battery powered heat lamp. It really doesn't take much. It's not some super drafty car so there isn't much air exchange for cold air to get it. OT people are just too poors to have a second or 3rd car.

The fire would keep him quite warm.

i really don't get why EVs are so divisive on this board.

and they deal in absolutes. They push back on something they do not understand and feel threatened by. Because of this they are unable to say "hey, it's not for me or I don't want it" and move on with their lives. If they honestly think that this will kill O&G they really are short sighted

The last time I was stuck on a highway for an extended period of time was, uhm..........Never!

FIFY: Vast majority of all human beings on Earth rely on cheap energy sources that the Oil & Gas industry supports

Don’t forget about how EVs have been politicized. Only libtard cucks drive EVs while they watch their wife get plowed by her boyfriend while drinking small batch soy latte.

They associate EVs with “liberals” and everything else they hate is my guess
