I was told electric vehicle charging was cheap. Which should also mean not a big drain on the system. Where's the lie?
It is cheap.
My costs for charging per KwH are $0.07 during peak hours and $0.03 during off-peak hours. This equates to a full charge between $3-6 depending on when you charge.
Now, given that you can very easily set your Tesla to charge during off-peak hours by adjusting a single setting, there really is little reason not to do this regardless of the electrical grid (why pay double for something you don't have to?)

I'm mostly ranting for the rest of y'all on ERCOT. I'm in a county (one of about 40) who is on Southwest power pool.

It absolutely doesn't. Anyone who says so either don't know what the hell they are talking about or is lying in a attempt to score political points.

To ease the stress on our grid you'd have to convince people to stop blasting their AC all day every day.
This but people probably won’t do it w/o some sort of motivation. I’m not sure of a way to positively motivate people to set their AC at 75 in the summer but there definitely is a way to negatively motivate by prorating the consumption.
Energy hogs should pay more. Just stop before people say living in a 75 degree no humidity house with plenty of air movement is unbearable Bc that’s just BS. In SoLa when the temperature is that OUTSIDE, people are OUTSIDE all day long.

Or we could, oh I don't know, build more power plants....

We are being asked to not run our dishwashers during peak time!
Our politicians have focused on political theatre instead real life problems for years and it is catching up to us.

If I had a Tesla and lived in Texas, I would charge my car exclusively during those hours.
Why would you do this except for being an a-hole?
Also most ppl already charge cars off peak.

So far this year, the US government has given more money to Ukraine than it spends on road infrastructure per year.
That shows you what they think of citizens in this country.

Sure so in 5-10 yrs we will be in a good spot OR we could do both. Prorating consumption can be done NOW and that will absolutely help with demand.
I’m sorry if you have to sleep under a down comforter in the summer Bc your house is 68 deg then you are doing something wrong.

That doesn't help with demand. Demand is surpassing supply, thus the problem.

Well, you'll be keeping your house at 85 so thank you for your service.

Destroy the oil and gas industry, limit oil supply, gasoline$ and diesel$ shortage increasing, must go electric, can't charge up electric cars at certain times, food shortages increasing, goods shortages increasing, inflation is ramping up, eventually medicine supply will see shortages, additions to this list will continue as the days and weeks pass...this is being done on purpose! Buckle up!

other than a once a generational freeze in 2021, when has the Texas power grid failed us?

Some liberal calling me an a-hole for not falling in line is enough motivation for me to do just about anything.

Certainly a drain on the roads, as EV owners aren't paying the fuel taxes the rest of us are.
They're driving, they need to pay their "fair share", unless they plan on using toll roads exclusively.
