re: Telling an angry woman to calm down

I generally just stare at people who are worked up. Then when they stop to take a breathe I ask them if they’re finished yet.

Especially at the Waffle House

“Chill out” works pretty well too. I learned that one the hard way many years ago.

Even in a professional setting.
I had a manager start losing her cool..
Told her she needed to calm down..

She did the opposite of what I had asked

One time I said “ what you need is a glass of freshly squeezed shut the frick up”.
Only once. Recovery went well and insurance paid for most of it!

When I'm mad, really, really mad (and know I'm right) I start in with the "Calm Down" and when her anger goes into overdrive, I yell over her at the same time as her. Get inside her OODA loop and don't let her finish thoughts. When she starts to run through the checklist (you all know the one. The checklist of things you've fricked up that she 'forgave you' for but brings up every time) I run either 1 of 3 subroutines:

- Laughing, loud and manically, injecting comments about how funny she's being.
- Bring up random stuff that has nothing to do with anything and tell her "how can you say that?" when she tries to point out that my topic isn't relevant
- Start doing a play by play a la Pat Summerall, trying to predict what old hatchet she'll dig up next. This one is my favorite.

So far I've survived. We're almost to year 6.

Another good option to go with is, "Stop acting crazy" or, "You're acting crazy." They both seem to work equally well.
