Tell me about Natchez. Is it a safe place to live?

I’m a white liberal in California and thinking of moving there. Bookmarked

Natchez is a cool place. It was cooler before all the hipsters descended and tried to turn it into a mini New Orleans, but the cops don’t play there so they haven’t managed to enable all the crime.

Shithole.
“Safe” if you are in certain areas but the entire region is just fricking depressing because most jobs outside the health care industry and tourism are gone.

Switching gears a bit, for those who live in or frequently visit these places, which town is worse off: Natchez or Vicksburg? I always enjoy visiting both, but man, those places are on hard times.

We visited both on a weekend getaway. Vicksburg was far worse.

Jim Bowie is dead, so you're probably safe.

Vicksburg was a more substantial 20th century town, so it's fallen a bit harder than Natchez.

Natchez has some cool old houses. You will see a beautifully restored old house next to a falling down crap hole. The sad part is the crap hole could also be a beautiful house with a little work.

Good deer hunting in the area.

Natchez is a good place to disappear in.

FIL used to hunt in Franklin County, probably 20 minutes out of Natchez, and get some good deer.

I mean, I’d live there long before New Orleans but Natchez is pretty junky.

I spend several weeks out of the year in Natchez. It’s got some great bars and restaurants. Great old buildings and houses. Lots of history. I have never once felt unsafe there. Although I will say, it does have some rough areas.

It's a pretty cool place. I grew up there. I'll be moving back in a few years when my child graduates high school.

I guess they are like the cities that died on vine that is Route 66.

At least Vicksburg has an interstate, a big Corps of Engineers office, and is only a 45 minute drive to Jackson.
When it comes to the historical stuff, both Natchez and Vicksburg are cool and it's probably a tie on that point.
Both have so much potential, but I see little signs of life in recent visits. One problem both cities faced was that neither were a capital city or had a university. Compared to a town like Hammond that has SLU, it makes a big difference.
