I adopted one last year. Was nervous about what he would be like, but he has proven to be super smart, very affectionate (even with my 8 year old and other dogs), and a holy hell for mice and squirrels in the back 40. Only drawback is how obnoxious his bark is when a stranger walks up to the house, but that's also a plus.

I have a friend who has two of them.

No matter how much time I spend at their house, their dogs bark at me every time I make a move.

There's many times that I haven't visited them due their annoyance.

Miniature schnauzers are the best dogs I have ever owned. I have owned three in my lifetime, currently still have one.

All of them were/are mild tempered, good around kids/guests, and only bark when there is a reason to bark. They do well indoors because they are not very big and do not shed.

Being they do not shed, they will need to be groomed every so often.

Had two as a kid.

Very intelligent, but downright hardheaded. Need to be trained, and trained well. You cannot be their friend- you have to be their master.

As others have mentioned, they're terriers. They were bred to catch rats, and they absolutely HATE squirrels. Can be mean to small children, unless they're trained. Very affectionate and loving lap dogs. Need a lot of exercise.

They do t shed or something right?

Schnauzers have hair so they shed like you and I would. They don't have a coat to blow so you never get hit with that mass of fur coming off.

We have two Giants currently and love them to death. They are GS #5 and 6 for us. They get groomed every 4 weeks in the winter and every 3 weeks in the summer. In the summer we do a much shorter cut for their furnishings to help them out a little in the heat.

Yea they tend to have bad health issues when they get older in my opinion. But they can make great dogs

Eli ignores squirrels but loves to stalk rabbits. If he sees a rabbit ho goes into super slow motion mode to stalk the rabbit. H'es gotten to within 3' a couple of times. I don't know what he'll do if he actually catches one but it is so funny to see him stalk one.

I had a miniature schnauzer named Jim. He loved me, my wife, and our daughter. Didn't really like anyone else

If you want a smaller dog, that’s the way to go imo. But I’ll always advise anyone who has the space to get a golden retriever or a golden doodle.

Had one. These posting the best dogs ever are being a bit dramatic. I'd put them middle of the pack. Good companion house dog. Just know they are breed for hunting and will bark a lot. The one I had was very protective of her property. They have skin issues but overall healthy.

i had a male years ago. He was smart could be very stubborn. He would bark at anything and i mean anything. in his early years he was playful and friendly. As he got older he had some health issues and started nipping at people. He ended up getting diabetes and didn't live much longer.

I have two. Points to consider

Make sure you use a reputable breeder. Good breeders cost good money. $2k to $2.5k for a pup is what I gave for the last one a few years ago. Cheap breeders usually take short cuts that you will pay for in the long run.

Don’t get a Merle. Just don’t. They are not pure bred schnauzers and have breeding issues that have not left the pool yet.

Be prepared that they will bark. So if the mailman visits you will know before they get to the door.

They are smart. They are loyal. They are outstanding dogs.

Great dogs, we've had two. Like all terriers they need to be socialized a lot with both people & other dogs when they're young or they'll get aggressive. Also like all terriers you had better be the boss of your house or they will be. Ours never bit anyone...

They are prone to kidney/bladder problems as they age, agree with not feeding them table scraps.
