I'll be arriving there Jan.5 and flying home Jan. 7. Basically I'll have time to kill the afternoon and evening of the 5th and maybe the evening of the 6th after dinner. What is there to do and is there anything I need to look out for?

History
The town was organized in September 1880 to serve the San Juan mining district. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad (D&RG) chose the site on the Animas River for its depot following a brief and most likely perfunctory negotiation with Animas City, two miles to the north.[10] The city was named by ex-Colorado Governor Alexander C. Hunt after Durango, Mexico, based on his favorable impression of that city resulting from a scouting trip undertaken on behalf of William J. Palmer, the head of the D&RG.

Area archaeological sites on the State and National historical registers include:

Mesa Verde National Park, a World Heritage site
Chimney Rock National Monument, the most northeastern known outpost of the Ancestral Puebloans
Durango Rock Shelters Archeology Site, a Basketmaker and Pueblo culture
Spring Creek Archeological District, a Basketmaker and Pueblo site
Talus Village, a Basketmaker site
Geography
Durango is located at 37°16'N 107°52'W at an elevation of 6,512 ft (1,988 m). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.8 square miles (18 km2).

Climate
According to the Köppen climate classification system, Durango has either a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csb) or a humid continental climate (Dsb) depending on which variant of the system is used. The average annual precipitation is 19.33 in (491 mm).[11] Its hardiness zone is 5b.[12]

Cool little mountain town... I'd walk around, have a drink, chill. Maybe buy your lovely wife a little gift. Beware the altitude...

Merry Christmas, DV.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina

From what I've seen (I Googled it) it does have a cool downtown. Although I have no idea what will be open on a Sunday. I am planning on picking up the wife and kids something. As for the Altitude, that might be an issue on Monday the 6th. The purpose of this trip is to inspect a Cat landfill compactor to see if it's a candidate for a machine rebuild. I'll send most of the day in the field climbing on and testing this compactor to see it's overall condition.

I grew up there!!!

Walk downtown, bars and shops everywhere!
Walk through The Strater Hotel... awesome 1887 hotel with 2 bars attached to it. Haunted

Go to the train station at the end of main ave..

Drive down 3rd Avenue (historic homes district)

Drive up to Fort Lewis College... overlooks downtown. Get out and take some pics

Hit up a dispensary

Drive up and ski at Purg... or at least go up for a drink at the lodge

Must get a Texas taco at Serious Texas bbq and grab some Mexican food at Tequillas

It's a ski town, most things are open 7 days a week. I'm sure you'll find cool stuff.

If you get a chance pick DPH up a refrigerator magnet. In turn he won't do anything for you.

We've got a rental so I may do this.

Due to corporate drug testing policy this sadly isn't an option.

I'll check these out. Thanks for the great info!

if the weather is nice and you have several hours a visit to Mesa verde (and a cliff dwellings tour) will be something you remember for the rest of your life

it’s one of the three or four most impactful places I’ve ever been

I wish I had more time for sightseeing now. We're arriving about noon on Sunday and our flight back leaves at 6:00 AM Tuesday. Really the only free time I know I'll have is Sunday afternoon.
