Long commute for 15 bucks an hour, yes. Long commute for a professional salaried job? No.

No. Median income in Laplace is like 59,000 - Chalmette is $40,000

LINK
The above link is one of the coolest websites. Breaks down all sorts of info and defines marketing demographics. It is by zip code and of course there are always exceptions within zip codes, but this may help.

During the 1970s and 1980s it was a middle to lower middle class suburb of NOLA. It was the butt of jokes because it was loaded with dude brah metal heads and their jacked up Monzas, Novas and Dusters. The parents were mostly blue collar, good natured "Yats." During the late 1990s it began to decline. Katrina finished it off by flooding every dwelling in the area. Now, it's a complete shithole that will flood again at some point in the not too distant future. Take the job and treat diabetes all day but live in Metairie.

My first real experience with New Orleans/Louisiana was partying/staying with some girls from Chalmette
It really, uh, fricked up my understanding of the whole city/state
"Why do these people sound and act like they're from South Boston"

Some have said you are a doc... offer is with Ochsner?
I'm guessing there are a lot of people on this thread that have never lived in St Bernard. As someone who has lived here for a while, but isn't from here, let me lay it out for you.
Housing - lots of new construction if that is your thing. It is somewhat expensive. But cost of living are less than NS and the city. if you buy an existing house, get a good inspection. A lot of the houses after Katrina were rebuilt with, let's just say, less than quality workmanship. But many of these houses have been identified and have been on the market for a long period of time.
Location - Arabi is developing a young arts district vibe. Meraux is a great place for families. Chalmette itself can be hit or miss. Some nice blocks, some trash blocks, and no real neighborhood definition. Violet past the Docville area is a dump. Down the road, you have a mix of nice large houses on large acreage, and trailers.
Schools - The elementary school that Meraux is zoned to, Davies, is an A rated, blue ribbon school. Lacoste is a B-school that is also very good. They are both zoned to Trist Middle which is a very good school. Chalmette HS is a great school compared to most other LA public high schools - it's huge with almost 2,000 kids. Great faciliies - great sports facilities (too bad the teams aren't very good), fine arts hall, workshop, etc. The rest of the public elementary and middle schools range from blah to not very good.
There is one Catholic school OLPS that isn't very good academically, and is rather cliqueish. Most of the rich and important people send their kids here. There is also Lynn Oaks school down the road, which is a private school that is very small and very run down. It's owned by the family of Lynn Dean, who is a former politician down here.
Recreation - Obviously, if you love the outdoors, this is a great place to be. Lots of fishing and duck hunting minutes from home. Parish sponsors a number of youth sports programs in all the major sports. There are probably more dancing schools per capita here than anywhere else in America. If you have daughters that are into that, lots of options.
Dining/Retail/Entertainment - No Michelin restaurants here, and really only one nice date-night type place called MeMe's. However, lots of great neighborhood type restaurants - The world famous Rocky and Carlo's, Brewster's, Charlie's, Crave, etc. Not a lot of chain places at all outside of fast food. Retail here is rather blah - a couple of grocery stores, drug stores, a Stage, and several dollar general type stores. Of course a Wal Marks. No Target, no mall, no major retail - need to drive to Jefferson or St Tammany for that. Small movie theater and TONS of bars and daiquiri shops. There's talk of a bowling alley and a trampoline place opening but nothing yet. It's kinda surprising there aren't more kid places considering how much this place is booming with kids.
Safety - it is an absolutely safe place to live. Maybe one or two murders a year and they are almost always domestic or drug related. We have a ton of officers here who are there in seconds when you need something, but don't pester you for going 3 mph over the speed limit. Home burglaries are almost unheard of, and the only car breakins are kids being stupid if you left your doors unlocked.
St. Bernard is one of the fasting growing parishes/counties in the country.
It's changing. Not everyone is on board with the change, and we have more than our fair share of trashballs and racists. There's also an undercurrent of drugs, and probably more smokers per capita than anywhere else.
At the same time, there are a lot of young families here, and a lot of people who are actively committed to making the community a better place.
If you get in with the right crowd, it's a great place to live. Come see for yourself.
