Yeah, I'll be in the Navy reserve for 2 years drilling at JRB. So we are looking at on base housing.

I live in Belle Chasse:

1. 30 minutes from Metairie, 20 minutes from downtown/uptown. Its legitimately not too far.
2. Salvo's is legit AF for seafood
3. Nothing to really do here other than eat
4. Safe as hell, I think murder rate is like 1/2yrs (base screwed that one up)
5. Even petty crimes are not far too common, someone tried to break into a house in our neighborhood down the street, heard the alarm sound, and police surrounded the house waiting for a homeowner to come home. They came within 5 minutes...shite was nuts
6. Water, Gas, Electricity, Property tax is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than NOLA. Only reason my parents decided to build a house out here.
7. Take the Gen. DeGaulle way to avoid the draw bridge. fricking Drawbridge. I hate that thing so much.

oh yeah LA 23 BBQ >>>>> any BBQ joint in the city. Too bad portions are kind of meh.

Glad to see Salvos. Back when I had a boat in Venice, Salvos was a must do stop.

Not much of a fisherman. More of a sit in the boat and drink.

Plaquemines Parish cops don’t mess around. Don’t drink and drive. Don’t speed. Don’t have illegal tint. Make sure all lights work properly.
Very safe and great place to raise a family though.

Unless you are in the right family, then they just sweep it under the rug.

A lot of my family live in Belle Chasse and the surrounding area. It’s a decent spot for families, not the best for partying but easy drive into the city.

Just moved back to BR after living in Belle Chasse for 2.5 years.

I Agree with Htran's list. Crime is low and there is a lot more green space than the rest of the westbank. It seems like a sheriff's officer lives on almost every block. When my wife got in a fender bender in town 8 cars responded immediately.

Additions to Htran's list:
1. The public schools, especially the elementary school, rank high every year.
2. Best place for lunch is Lil Lee's at the Conoco station in Jesuit Bend. (Aka "Pink Store" or "Green Top" depending on where you work)
3. World class fishing and duck hunting a short drive away that never has traffic.
4. Jeanfreau's is a great hardware store with awesome service. Beats the 15 minute drive to Home Depot or Lowe's for inexpensive items.

Cons:
1. A lot of the restaurants have very similar food so you will be headed across the bridge or to NOLA. BC did just get a decent Mexican joint though.
2. Small town drama / inbred politics
3. Newwave communications is the cable provider for most of Belle Chasse and they absolutely suck.

Is top notch. I live here with my 3 year old son and soon to be wife, and we love it. It’s quiet, crime is very low, we’re only a 10-15 minute drive from everything we need. You don’t have kids, but the schools are rated amongst the best in the state. Besides LA23(right outside of the front gate) and Salvo’s, we also have a Rotolo’s, Jalapeños Mexican place is pretty good, sushi place Asahi is good, Dairy Dip makes good sandwiches(I use them for lunch a good bit because it’s close to my plant), and Adam’s Catfish House is also good. Lil Lee’s in Jesuit Bend is ok, I wouldn’t say it’s the best place to eat, like someone else said. I have to go on base three times a week to check the water system, and there are always signs up advertising things going on on base. There’s also a restaurant out there, but I’ve never eaten there.
