This is a hard situation to deal with, as many of his friends are asleep and their parents will need to address this BEFORE their kids get on the bus to go to DTHS in the early morning.

so the second DTHS kid to die within the year?
Posted on 12/10/15 at 1:39 am to TigersSEC2010
is this one year to the day of the last kid dying or am I mixing them up?
Posted on 12/10/15 at 5:49 am to TigersSEC2010
From what I heard, yes. Another teenager was killed last year on Highway 74, on the same day.

What a tragedy. I feel for the family right now. So many questions.

I'm amazed it doesn't happen more often. I could have ran over a teenager last night who was sitting on the edge of the road smoking wearing all black. The road was empty so I was basically driving in the middle, but it wouldn't be a hard mistake to make.

Riding with 50 MPH traffic on unlit highway with no shoulder. Hit from behind. On that stretch I can understand how someone would not see him til it was too late.

You can't blame the driver in situations like this.
Kid made a dumb mistake and paid the ultimate price for it. And his family is paying for it now, that's the sad part. The ones that get left behind.
I mean, we ALL did dumb stuff as kids that could very well have gotten us killed. Just luck of the draw a lot of us are still here I guess.

Damn. I passed this wreck last night. No emergency vehicles were there yet. I saw the bike under the truck but I didn't see anyone lying in the road or anything. So I just went around the wreck.

Updated with news link .
Why a teenager or anyone is riding there with no shoulder and in the dark is beyond me

I live in a nearby subdivision. He was friends with a kid in my neighborhood. My son had 2 friends over at our house last night, and one of them got the phone call; turns out one of the kids at my house had driven past the accident. Hit all of them pretty hard. Can't imagine getting that phone call as a parent.

This is very sad to know.

TROOP A-NEWS RELEASE
December 10, 2015
14 Year Old Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Vehicle in Ascension Parish Crash
Prairieville, LA – Shortly before 6:00 pm on December 9, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash involving a bicyclist on LA 73 north of US 61 in Ascension Parish. The crash took the life of 14 year old Brennan Rube of Prairieville, LA.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Rube was traveling southbound on LA 73 on his bicycle. At the same time, 26 year old Joshua Ashford of Gonzales, LA was traveling southbound on LA 73 in a 2000 Dodge truck. As Ashford approached Rube from behind, the right front side of his vehicle struck Rube and ejected him from his bicycle.
Rube was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Ashford was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample will be taken from Rube and Ashford for analysis.
At the time of the crash, Rube was not wearing a helmet and he did not have the required white light on the front of his bicycle and red light in the rear. Rube was also wearing dark colored clothing.
Troopers have also determined that Ashford was traveling in excess of the posted 45 mph speed limit. Ashford was charged with Speeding and Negligent Homicide. He has been booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.
Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that Louisiana law requires a minimum distance of three feet when passing a bicycle. Bicyclist should remain as close to the right of side of the roadway as possible and are required to follow all traffic laws. Bicyclists should never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes and avoiding injuries.

It would be hard to avoid an accident like that even if the driver wasn't speeding.
