It's a hell of a thing for the gov't to take the life of its citizens. Given what we know about overzealous/corrupt/political prosecutors and downright dumbass juries, I think it makes sense to reserve the death penalty for the most heinous of crimes and hopefully in situations where there is no shadow of a doubt of guilt.
