Impossible to stop the race. The winner, if they can harness and control it, runs the world.
Guarantee china, Google, us govt can’t afford to stop because they know their competitors won’t stop.
The shame is it’s a risk every single person on the planet shares, but the benefit may be for but a few.
Make no mistake, this is similar to being in the beginning is the atomic age in terms of changes and risks to the world, but magnified 1,000 fold.

I saw a rumor yesterday someone is reporting that GPT5 will start training in December and is expected to be AGI, the actually smart kind of AI and not just a good parrot.
To be fair, it sounded like a bogus rumor that probably was started by Microsoft and intended to cause chaos at Google. But if AGI is going to be ready this soon, I would say we as a people aren't ready for it.

No shite.
Utopians will destroy the human race and are too socially backward to realize it.

It’s never the people in first place that are asking for a timeout.
Well Musk bailed on Open AI years ago and poached some of their talent on the way out. Now that they are proving to be wildly successful with Microsoft's money he wants them to take a time out in their pursuit of AGI.

The letter asks AI developers to "immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4."
Good luck with that.
There’s way too much money at stake to expect altruism at this point. Whoever is first to market with an ASI will immediately become the most powerful person/corporation in the world. The world might end shortly thereafter, but never underestimate humans’ ability to overlook risk in the face of large reward.

Isn't the timeline between now and AGI a lot longer than AGI to ASI? And once we achieve ASI, we are either in awesome shape or totally fricked?

I don't read many books, but I've read about 80% of this book (Our Final Invention). It's an interesting read, but borders into the ridiculous IMO (in terms the "gray goo"/nanotech stuff). It got so weird that I eventually stopped reading. I need to pick it back up and finish it off at some point I guess.

Yeah man, how did we ever get by without it?
