I've been here on Oahu for the past 2 years. Cost of living is very high.

It's a little more expensive than CA.

Electricity ranges between 250-400 monthly, depends on of you live on the windward or leeward side.

If you have a family of 4+ and live in 3+ bedroom home. If OP is single and rents a studio or 1BR his electricity will be $100.

Not every house has ac.

Very true. I put in a Mitsubishi split A/C last year when we bought our condo.

Traffic sucks for no reason.

Maddeningly true.

Rent for a decent place starts around 2500 a month.

Again, it depends on if OP is single, but you certainly don't need to spend $2,500 for a "decent" place even if he's married and needs a 1BR.

60k isn't nearly enough to enjoy living here.

I wouldn't want to only make $60k here and couldn't with our lifestyle, but he could do it easily and enjoy the shite out of living in Hawaii for a year or two or more.
Get a studio 1-2 blocks from the beach for $1,200 (all in) - $15k/yr
$30/day for food (shouldn't need this much) - $10,000/yr
Hike and explore on off-days - free
Surf every day - free other than buying a board which you can get cheap
Get a bike or beater for transpo and enjoying around
etc

If someone wants to enjoy a beach living lifestyle they could do it here for $60k. People just don't know how to fricking budget.

I've now been in Hawaii for 12 years (married the last 2.5) and have never gotten into a fight with a local or anyone for that matter. I got called "haole" one time when I first moved to HI, was playing pool and a bit drunk so I'm sure it was partly my fault but damn there are some over dramatic people on here.

ETA: And yes, there are some big roaches here but they don't fly like they did when I lived in Metry

Kama'aina?

It is nice and you can get 10-15% discounts at most places.

Well that's $60k working about 180 days a year. You would think certain places in Hawaii would provide an opportunity to make some money doing something else as well. Not to mention there is an (arguably) reliable pension at the end.
Here in The Keys we also have a teacher shortage. Our school district advertises in several major cities (Chicago, Cleveland, etc) to lure teachers here. The cost of living is a similar issue, as well as an overall housing shortage. First year teachers start at $45k here.

Very good point. Could always find a second job in the summer or just budget really well and spend all summer surfing and being a beach bum.

5k to move isn't shite.

Wouldn't be worth it at $10k either. You would definitely want to make sure it's taxed up as well.

<---- Jelly. Went to Maui on my honeymoon and tried to stay. Chilled on the NS while on Oahu, and told the wife we probably won't see anything as beautiful again.

Maui is a place I'd like to live. I lived in Kauai for 7 years and then moved to Oahu for the last 5. I rent my condo out in Kauai so eventually I think we'll retire there, but I could see us going to Maui next. It's a nice mixture of Kauai and Oahu. Get you and the wife a mileage card and you can fly back for free.

Hawaii is currently in a teaching shortage and hiring certified teachers at 60k a year. There is a moving expense attached to that as well but it is not really that much. Would you move to Hawaii for 65k a year?

You can't afford bail money from banging students in Hawaii with on $65k. COL there is bad.

Interesting conversations going on in this thread. Lots of contention regarding this issue. The link is to George Takei sharing the call for teachers on his Facebook page.

You lived on Kauai? We go every other year for 2 weeks since 2004. The only place I have ever experienced the "white hate" was when we drove up Olehana Rd from Kapa'a. We went on a 'country' drive one day and got back into an area where we started getting strange looks from locals. Turned into a little community to get turned around and saw it was a dead end street. Drove about halfway down while locals in their yards were yelling at us to leave. Turned into a driveway to turn around and locals started coming at our car from a neighboring yard screaming at us. We high tailed it out of there quickly and drove back through the gauntlet. Only now they were up on the side of the road flipping us off and cussing us. But that was the only time I have ever seen it firsthand. We were pretty far up from the coast (for Kauai standards) and off the beaten path.

You bought a timeshare for every other year? I lived there from 2005 to the end of 2011 (I did live in Thailand for 6 months in 2011 though). Been in Oahu since.

Yeah, deep in Kapa'a or Anahola is localville. They get mad when tourists come down their street. Has nothing to do with color. Every city has the same thing if you go off the wrong path. shite, in NOLA if you go 2 blocks off Bourbon you might not make it out alive.

There is some anger from locals towards mainlanders. Most of these "locals" are from the Philippines and other Asian areas so I don't give a crap. Like I said I've never had an issue. It's the standard American tourist thing though, if you come disrespecting the land you'll get in kind. Same stories about "how terrible" Parisians are towards Americans. bullshite. I went there and they loved me and I had a blast. It's the loud tourists who demand things and don't show respect people don't like.

The rampant petty crime surprised me.

That, and the filthy conditions of the public facilities at those beautiful beaches.

A freaking timeshare? Where did you see that in my post?

We rent houses. One week in one area and the next week in another area. Last year we stayed at a Rosewood Property home up Olehana Rd above the school. Gated 2 acre estate. The second week we rented a house at Anini Beach.

Don't do hotels , resorts , or timeshares. Only house rentals of B&Bs . My wife and I and the kids love Kauai and just look forward to going every other year. Off years we do a Caribbean vacation for the summer.

Nothing against timeshares but I would never do that.
