quote:Nope.
Since grades are a function of/correspond with "whole" numbers
For A, your grade needs to be 90 <= X <= 100
For B 80 <= X < 90
For C 70 <= X < 80
Stop whining.

There's a cutoff for a reason.
If all the kids with 89.9s get As, then why not those with 89.8s?
If all the kids with 89.5s get As, then why not 89.4s?
You're still "getting screwed" because of .1.
Or, you just didn't make the cut. Ya know, just like at 90.

See if there is any extra credit you can do.

All of that is true, but I also find that the "real world" is a hell of a lot more lenient than school was.. and their whole speech about it being preparation for adult life was often BS.

Yeah, wait until you don't hit production numbers and ask your boss to round up for you. Let us know how that goes

All depends on your effort in the class. My final semester I had one class that could have kept me from a 4.0. Teacher new I had gone to class every day and most of the time arrived early and stayed late. It was a group project class and the 2 students responsible for getting me information weren't doing the work and just made them up. Based on performance, I should have had a C. She only gave a C to those two students and the rest of my group, who busted arse, all got A's. Not all teachers, or bosses for that matter, are douchebags. Now if you missed class and didn't take every opportunity to make a higher grade, then take your C and learn a lesson.

I wouldn't approach the teacher by begging, for one.
I would say something along the lines of: I realize that a 79.7 is not an 80, and my best effort (was it really your best effort?) wasn't good enough to earn a B in your class. Considering the serious nature of failing to attain a B for me, and the small difference between a B and a C in this case, I would be grateful for an opportunity to earn extra credit to get my grade over 80. I fully realize that you do not have to grant my request, and if you say no, I will understand and accept that. But as I am my only advocate, I must ask. Thank you for your consideration.
Now... let me ask you this. You have to maintain a 3.0 to keep your TOPS scholarship. If you need a B in this class to keep TOPS, then that either means you have all B's and this one C... or you have multiple C's and not enough A's to counterbalance them. If the latter scenario is the case, do you think you deserve to maintain your TOPS scholarship? If so, why?

Wait until the new grading scale goes in and the low A isn't worth 4 points anymore.

Maybe it's just laziness on my part, but I've never haggled with a teacher over a grade. If I get a grade that I'm disappointed with, I can usually always look back to the times I skipped a couple classes or didn't do a homework assignment or two and I can blame myself. Maybe I've been doing college wrong

Many times the decision to round up or not to round up is based upon what type of student you were. Class attendance, participation in class discussion, adequate preparation for class, etc.
That said, one agrees to the syllabus by continuing in the course after the syllabus has been handed out. I normally let students know where they stand throughout the semester so that there are no surprises.
If the instructor works from a threshold perspective, 89.8 is a B. 90 is the bottom score for an A. I use a 7 point scale in my classes, so you would need a 93 to get a A.
You are the type of teacher I made a point to avoid my 4 years at LSU. Congrats on being an a-hole

I hear of this a lot. It probably is the most frustrating thing when an engineering or science teacher does it. Unless they graded all of your work to the 2nd decimal point, then your final grade can not be more accurate than your test grades, homework grades, etc. If you learned about significant digits, you will know what I am trying to explain.

I've always taken whatever the teacher gave me, myself. You're actually doing college right.
I'm just trying to help the OP. Asking for an opportunity to earn extra credit has maybe a 10% chance of succeeding. But whining and begging has a 0% chance of working.
I never did either. I just played the hand I was dealt.

I'm definitely in this group. I never once discussed a grade with a teacher.
But to be honest, it's not a bad practice if you are looking out for yourself. That bratty girl in the front the class who argued to get her B to an A probably ended up with a high GPA and a cushier job than I have, so props to her. I don't think anyone deserves it, but I also think it's worth a shot if you want to put in the effort. Do what's best for you. It's not like they are going to lower it and the class is done, so the teacher isn't going to hold anything against you.

The dude made neither a 79 or an 80. He made a 79.7. Since grades are a function of/correspond with "whole" numbers, at the point of the OP earning a 79.7, the prof had the choice of either throwing .7 earned points down the toilet, or awarding the student .3 unearned points. I believe that awarding the OP .3 unearned points is more representative of what the OP earned. Modern math and science believe the same thing - that's why each would ask that you "round up" if you HAD to get to a whole number.
Excuse me...what???
The number 80 can be represented as 80.0 -- 79.7 is less than 80.0. Where do you come up with this "whole number" nonsense?

I answered the original post with the best breakdown in logic and no one cares to comment.

I wish i would have had a 10 point scale in college. How about you be gratefull for that instead of bitching that its not a 10.5 scale?
