If he was teaching his students about free speech then I don't see what the big deal is. I respect the flag as much as one possibly can but I also understand "the flag" is more of an abstract symbol and not just a piece of cloth

What if the teacher said "And now, I want to show you an example of free speech that can be exercised in this country. I don't support or condone this action, but this is just to show you" and stepped on the flag? Still not ok?
What if he then said "Now I want to show you an example of an 'inappropriate helicopter.' I don't support or condone this action", then pulls out his junk and does helicopter penis? Is that ok?

I think this is a bad decision. The school board is part of the government and the first amendment is supposed to protect citizens from government retaliation for free speech. If it was a private school I would be ok with the firing but not in a public school.

I never understood why so many get upset over a flag. It's a flag. I mean, why would you want to step on it? Why would you care if someone stepped on it? People are crazy.
with as much bitching as people do about our country, you would think flag stepping would be a second thought.

I am afraid that you are the one who does not understand.
You are not supposed to have consequences from the government for free speech issues. From other citizens, sure, but not the government.
If the government punishes you every time you say something it disagrees with then it is not free speech.

Schools are not a public forum for purposes of 1st amendment analysis. It doesn't really matter what you're okay with if it has nothing to do with a legal standard.
