Everyone has the right to free speech. You are not free from the consequences of that speech/action.
Swing and a miss.

I don't know why we keep having this same conversation.
Aww, that's cute. You tried to get everyone with a zinger, but it is you that looks like the idiot.

At first I thought the school board was probably going a bit overboard with this. He's entitled to free speech protections after all. But then I read this:
Why did he decide to conduct a civics lesson in English class? Plus it seems like he had an axe to grind if he reacted that way. He really could have handled it better than that.

Parmenter told the Journal Gazette earlier in June the incident occurred when he was teaching his English class on free speech. Parmenter used the small American flag on the corner of the room as a pointer.
A student called Parmenter out for using the flag as a pointer, saying it was disrespectful. Paramenter said he then dropped the flag on the floor and stepped on it to show an example of free speech as part of the lesson.

Seems like some kid told him he was being disrespectful too it and he wanted to show off or look like a badass.

he should have just used a Confederate flag, then nothing would have happened....

Agreed. Seems he is using the free speech thing as a defense, when really it had nothing to do with the lesson and it's his only leg to stand on.

The teacher even said he was showing an example of free speech for a lesson. But God forbid that a teacher actually try to teach kids stuff or you get brainiacs saying OMG HE TAUT CIVICS IN ENGLISH KILL HIM!!!!!

I am afraid that you are the one who does not understand.
You are not supposed to have consequences from the government for free speech issues. From other citizens, sure, but not the government.
If the government punishes you every time you say something it disagrees with then it is not free speech.
A government employee being fired for acting inappropriately while on the job is not the same as a private citizen being punished for saying something the government disagrees with. What if the teacher routinely used racial slurs and promoted KKK propaganda during class? Should he be fired then or is that speech protected too?

When you take a teaching job, you sogn a contract. That contract has a code of conduct. This teacher was not fired for exercising his 1st amendment right, but for violating his code of conduct in his contract.
But you are right, I probably don't understand.

One day, probably in the near future, we will have a case in court debating if it is free speech or indecent exposure. It's a sad day that we have even come to this type scenario..
