Uber is a scam for drivers. The model is built on cheap rides for people and delayed operating costs for drivers when their cars everntually break down.
Some free thinking people need quick money and are willing to accelerate the depreciation of their vehicle in exchange for some quick and easy money on dates and during times that work best for them. Are you opposed to this kind of freedom?

Good point. If they're dumb enough to do that, then can you really blame uber for preying on them?

My first-hand account of this trend since I've lived here since 2013:
- It's generally a net positive that Uber has been introduced
- There are a hell of a lot of negative externalities that have been introduced in the system since this: lots of traffic jams caused by Uber drivers waiting for riders; Uber drivers who don't know what they're doing in the city; Uber's idiotic pricing system (especially the recent one) screwing people over repeatedly; generally jamming up traffic for everyone - if there is someone acting stupid on Chicago streets, 9 times out of 10, it is an Uber driver
It has been a plus, but not an unmitigated plus. I can't wait for the day until Uber drivers are automated, because I've been using this system in Chicago for four years, and I trust our taxi drivers more than the Uber drivers at this point.

Cabs in nola used to suck, i remember waiting an hr to go downtown. Now with uber we can go anywhere within 5 mins. People should remember that moneg is being spent when people are out and about. Cheap and reliable cabs stimulate the economy. Ive used more cabs now with uber than ive had in my whole life, its here to stay

Well, in the case of taxis, it is the fault of taxi unions themselves.
The public had nothing to do with it.
Who regulates Taxis? The Companies wanted more cabs, medallion holders wanted fewer. Drivers in major markets waited DECADES for the oppurtunity to be a medallion holder, and in many cities they were sold for hundred's of thousands of dollars.
I am just looking for the reason for change in Regs:
1897, the modern Taxi was invented (auto/hail)
1900-1905 Telephone popularized:Why didn't the GOV make "phone cabs"? ie"oh, Taxis are for hails, phone cabs are for called in phone requests"
1945-1950: CB's invented: Gov doesn't make "CB Cabs", they instead allows CB radio to be used for "dispatching" cars to locations called in for service.
PC's
1973-80: Mobile phone invented but no "Mobile Cab" invented, regs allow for mobile phones to be used in tandem with dispatch.
1990's Smart phones invented: no changes to the taxi industry, they can be used with dispatch
1990's Internet mainstream: Order cab's online, no new "iCab" invented for internet dispatched cabs.
2010 "App Phones" become popular: "Oh frick this changes EVERYTHING"! The phone was nothing, CB was nothing, cell phones were nothing, the PC was nothing......but APPS..OMG apps change ALL the rules"
That's all I'm trying to get people to understand...phones, CB, Cell Phone, Internet...creaed NO new entity/regulatory shift....but an APP all of a sudden did?
an APP is just simple computer application right? What's fricking new?

I hope this is a rhetorical question. And yeah, if the taxi companies had an app, more people would use them. Uber and Lyft is just a better service. End of story. The Pro-taxi guys always change the argument instead of just admitting this simple fact.

the entire solar industry in the United States only outnumbers "fossil fuel power plant jobs" it's propaganda.
And, no one buys solar without subsidies. And no one makes solar panels without burning fossil fuel.
SO, there's that...

Just spent 4 days in Chicago. Didn't use a cab the entire time.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing this. As someone who used to have to rely on taxis a lot, I can count on one hand the number of pleasant experiences I had. Screw them.

And government officials promptly had egg on their face the moment these inferior imitations promptly experienced server crashes during high demand downtown events. Uber and Lyft will now be back.
Uber and Lyft are back in Austin. Have been for a few weeks, and the alternative apps are freaking out and dropping rates. It's awesome.

Based on changing market if I were taxi driver I would consider another stream of revenue to compensate market downturn. Like Uber. Call me crazy.
