So I am a frequent user of Amazon and pay for Prime primarily because of the free shipping and no tax which can add up to a lot of savings even with the annual fee. The last couple of months I have noticed many of my items are now being taxed. Now I know technically you are supposed to owe the taxes anyway yada yada yada. Just wondering what has changed to make taxing common now? I am thinking it might not be worth it anymore.

Meh.

I use amazon for the convenience more than anything. I still save money and time so it's still worth it to me.

Well they could have Nexus in MS. In my humble opinion, we are about 3 to 10 years away from a online sales tax agreement between the states. There is just too much money in it for the States to not do something about it.

When they have a physical location of any kind in your state you have to pay sales tax. It can be a warehouse, data center, etc.

They opened up some giant data centers in Columbus 2 years ago and started charging tax.

Amazon used to only charge taxes if they have a physical presence (ie warehouse) in your state per normal tax laws.

Not sure what changed but Amazon started charging taxes in alot more stated this year . Sucks

Look for 3rd party sellers. Many are Prime eligible and most still do not charge sales tax. Anything shipped directly from Amazon will be taxed.

It was always a catch-22 for Amazon. They want to expand locations to improve access and deliveries, but by law any state they deliver from, they must charge tax to the residents therein.

So now they're just adding in the taxes so they can expand at will. We'll see if it pays off for them, there being a decent swath of tax-free competition with quick deliveries.

If you can't find a way to make Amazon Prime worth it even with sales taxes included, then you're doing something wrong.

The sales tax makes that much of a difference for you?

I have used eBay more these first 3 months of this year than I have in the past 5 years combined.

Getting better prices on most things, with free shipping and usually only in a day or 2 longer.

I am quite sure I am not the only that is looking away from Amazon because of the change in their tax policy in Louisiana.

The tax thing really isn't a big deal. Been paying tax on Amazon stuff for a long time, don't even care. Amazon Prime is still awesome. Still find stuff on Amazon cheaper than other places and knowing it will be delivered to me the next day or the day after at the latest....worth it.

The Amazon Now feature is great when you are stuck home sick or just being incredibly lazy(my husband used it last weekend so he wouldn't miss any March Madness coverage). Don't have to leave my house, can order some soup, crackers, ice cream, whatever...less than 2 hours later an Amazon delivery person is ringing my doorbell to hand over my purchases to me.

Beats me. sucks though. I guess Amz knew it was coming so they decided just to jump in head first. I would think it the state of MS is getting taxed then every 50 states will shortly be getting notice.

I definitely am looking elsewhere to buy my goods. Especially on higher priced stuff.

they started charging here I Oklahoma on March 1st.

I don't know how they are figuring it, but I made a $45 purchase last week and they only charged me $.45 tax. I can live with that.

maybe it's just state? and not local? no idea

So, because you can no longer get away with tax evasion, you won't use Amazon anymore? Oh, you were properly claiming those on your state tax returns where it explicitly asks you if you made any internet or out of state purchases that you hadn't already paid sales tax on? My bad, then.
