Weird/troubling

You should be able figure out the reason why. Even if you're old or not too smart.

Similar story. A few years ago I hit a $5000 jackpot on a slot machine and they wouldn’t pay me because my license just expired two days before. I was only there because it was my birthday weekend and didn’t realize that it just expired. They held the money for me until I could present valid identification. You bet your arse that I had valid ID on Monday and picked up my money.

It is the law.....but I’m not sure what part of an expired license invalidates your age.

Weird/troubling that they capture my license information and not just verify age

Agree 100%. They should definitely risk fines and losing their jobs so you can buy beer when you are too lazy to go get a new license. The audacity of those assholes.

f they don't card a 60 year old, and it turns out his driver's license is expired, is there some sort of penalty?

As far as I know, yes. The law requires that everyone purchasing alcohol or enterring a place for adults (over 18/21, like strip clubs or casinos) to have a VALID ID, and it’s the employee’s job to check. A state issued ID has no expiration on it, or at least it didn’t used to expire- however, a driver’s license expires every 6 years (used to be 4). If the bar/restaurant/club doesn’t check for a valid ID, then the restaurant AND the person without an ID are both in trouble.

My wife’s employees (paint/wine studio) always asks if they can put a $3,000 credit hold on the customer’s credit card if they want to remain, since that’s the fine they would be charged. They usually decline :haha:
