Target declines my beer purchase.....

I was in self checkout and scanned the beer. The screen said assistant would be there shortly. Lady comes over and asks to see my license. I said can't you tell by looking at me, in a friendly manner.
She asks for my license and proceeds to key in my license number. Then says "sorry your license is expired." I just had a birthday two weeks ago.
Weird/troubling that they capture my license information and not just verify age.
