the word "ghetto" originally applied to Jews -- "ghetto" is Italian for foundry, and in Venice Jews were restricted to the metalworking area of the city

"Ghetto" became famous due to the Warsaw ghetto of WWII. After the war, a certain group co-opted the word, both for political advantage abd b/c it sounded better than "slum" (how often do you hear slum nowadays?)

But as in the usual progressive cycle, the problem didn't improve but it negatively affected the word. So later came "hood". Now we're on "community"

The soul of a nation…

I am still trying to figure out what nation this is.

I know, but it's unclear on how forcibly moving Jews into approved zones in multiple countries (ghettos), or rounding them up and harassing and killing them through pogroms has anything to do with the usual suspects wilding, and being dispersed by rotary wing assets. I mean, it could provide training material for the assets at MacDill at least

Was the presumption supposed to be that if we just got rid of people that frequent short Carnival cruises it'd stop? One would suspect just arresting them and not letting them out of jail on little to no bond would mitigate the problem.

Michael Fay says if you cane them they'll have second thoughts about repeat offenses.

I missed the part where the Tampa police use the helicopter to stop a street takeover.

They didn't, they just wanted a safer view of what was going on down there.

lol, that stands for laugh out loud. How many Jews were in the video? But enjoy the pearl clutching. I’m sure you’ll get a bunch of likes on Bluesky.

I think you completely missed Lemmy’s point. It seemed to me that he was pointing out that, while Kafka’s etymology of “ghetto” was interesting, it had little to do with the thread.

History shows people will take measures into their own hands when the authorities fail.

History shows a very mixed bag in these circumstances. In late Roman times the authorities stopped defending the city. It led to barbarian incursions. There were some cases of citizen action to thwart this, but not nearly enough, and Rome fell.

In the modern USA we have had over half a century of lawlessness in our cities. Instead of resulting in vigilantism, it resulted in white flight to new suburbs. The only vigilantism I can think of was Bernard Goetz, Kyle Rittenhouse, and a movie with Charles Bronson.

Yes, Captain obvious.
That’s not what the title of the article implied. So it becomes click bait.
And sort of worth commenting on.
